Don't laugh, but my father got the wrong card stuck in the card/SD card reader in his toshiba note book. He tried removing the stuck card by inserting a butter knife and in doing so he not only pulled out the card but all the little wires that contact the card.

We have carefully pulled apart the small wires just inside the card reader so it doesn't short out.

My question is now, how to disable this card reader in windows vista or, perhaps even better, within the bios.

I can always use an external card reader via the usb port.

    Any advice is much appriciated.

I doubt there is a way to disable it in the BIOS, but you can disable it via Device Manager in Vista(orb-type device manager or check for a link in System and Maintenance).

In the manager, expand each section until you see something that mentions the card reader(most likely it is made by Rioch or TexasInstruments).

Also, depending the situation, you may want to wrap the ends of the wires with electrical tape.
