I just noticed this icon that Toshiba added to the Start Menu. It's an icon that reads 'Buy at ToshibaDirect.' It's kind of an eyesore having it there. It's not in the Programs list mind you - it's located run under 'Run' on the start menu. Right-clicking on it does nothing but bring up a sub-menu that reads 'Buy at ToshibaDirect.'

Does anyone know how to get rid of that icon?

edit: Here's a pic of what I'm talking about, complete with the right-click menu.

edit 2: I am aware of Toshiba's suggested fix here

but there does not fix the problem either as I cannot find the option they're referring to. It may be because I'm using WinXP MCE.

Nope, no properties whatsoever. I think I might have to edit the registry to get rid of it, but if that's what it takes...

    Try this:

Right Click on the Start button->Properties->Customize->Advanced->Under start menu items look for any entry for "Link from manufacturer' or "Buy from Toshiba" or something similar. Uncheck the entry. Click OK.

I mentioned in my original post (edit #2) that that does not work. I looked there but there is no option 'manufacturer link' for me to uncheck. Again, it may be because the system is running WinXP MCE.

MCE shouldnt be any different. I guess you will have to search for the registry keys to remove the link.

That Toshiba fix does not work. I do have the link for manufacturer and I unchecked it and went back to the Start menu and it's still there. Doesn't bother me though.

Might want to search the Domcuments and Settings folder for ToshibaDirect.

Huzzah! I found out how to get rid of it. There's a value that can be edited in the registry to either hide or show the 'Manufacturer Link.' Once I turned it 'on' I was able to deselect the link from the menu.

Credit goes to this guide here, that I found via Google. It even explains how to get rid of the thing entirely, rather than simply hiding it.

I hope this helps someone else who's irked by the same thing!
