3 weeks ago I bought a Toshiba Portege R100. I'm happy with it, except the screen is driving me crazy. Its just not bright enough and gives me a headache. I'm considering going ahead and buying the Dell Inspiron 700m. It's a consdierably heavier but the screen is suppose dto be amazing. Am I nuts? Is it worth selling the portege to get the fujitsu? I'd appreciate any advice!

processor speed and notebook performance is all very nice, but I'm a big proponent of having a notebook that is big on usability via a good keyboard and screen...if you get headaches you won't be productive. I've not heard of this issue with the R100 before, but I'm not overly familiar with this notebook...we posted a review a while back:

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.aspx?newsID=1915

Perry reviewed the R100 and said "The screen is adequately bright with good contrast and fast response time."

I used the 700m for over a month and loved the screen, it's awesome. The 700m is heavier than the R100 though. I'm not sure which Fujitsu you are referring too though...could you clarify that?

Thanks for the advice! The R100's display is definately clear and sharp and the responce time is fine, it's the brightness that bothered me, it just is too dark for my "sensitive eyes". I took a look at the Fulitsu p7010 but the 10.6 display was a little to small for me, then i read several reviews about Inspiron 700m saying that the screen was excellent so I've gone ahead and purchased the 700m. I really didn't want something as "heavy" as the Dell but I'm looking foward to a good screen.
    Thanks again!

    Terry,

Just have to ask, but did you max out the LCD brightness? Usually if you go on battery, the screen brightness drops to save battery power, this may be your issue. Goto the Power Options in the Control Panel and see if you can change these settings. Also, since it's a Toshiba, it's possible it has some Toshiba utility for Power Management, check those settings as well. One final place to check is in the BIOS. My old Toshiba has the option in the BIOS as well.

Usingthe function keys I have made the Brightness as it'll let me even when it's plugged in. It still to dark though. I'm going to try the bios, thanks!

It's possible the LCD you have has a bad backlight. When I was repairing notebooks, replacement LCD's sometimes turned out to be dull and darker than the original. It turned out to be specific brands of LCD's that weren't good. Your issue may be the same case. Maybe a replacement LCD may be in order.

** Note, I can't guarantee that this will fix the problem. Also, the replacement LCD may be even worse than the one you cirrently have, so it's up to you if you want to get it replaced or not.

I got the Inspiron 700m today. The screen is awesome. I really like the toshiba's weight and looks but ~sighs~ i think im keeping the dell and selling the Portege R100.
