Well, that's what you get when you buy a low end budget refurb. I have had my Toshiba for a year now and have never had a problem.

No, that's not what you get for buying a budget laptop. That's what you get when you've been sold a blatantly bad product.

Mdsniper7, sorry to hear about your situation. Can't you get the retailer to replace?

Haha, my mom still uses a 6 year old Toshiba laptop. It's running XP just fine too! But I will give her this Sony early next year when I get a new laptop for myself.

I've been using Toshiba desktops, and laptops since 1997. Never had any serious problems. This just sounds like a problem with the OS installation by the one who refurbished it. Boycott them for a replacement, or OS CD (which by law they must provide a Recovery CD and or installation CD to reformat your system)

MDSniper, when you first powered it on, did it go thru the final install stages, have you create ID/Password, etc, or did it boot right to the OS desktop?

What folks are trying to say is that folks like the "geek squad" at best buy and other places check out other customers returns and if find nothing wrong do put them back on the shelves as NIB. If you had to complete the initial setup, it might have been "new", if it was already completed for you and it went right to the desktop when you initially powered it on, you likely got a REFURB NIB. :)

Ten years ago, before Gateway, Dell and then others came to being, Toshiba was the de facto standard for laptops in business (Compaq was right there with them for a while). That’s when they cost around $4,000 and the only people that had them were corporate execs.

Toshiba quality has remained consistently good, and they have been in the laptop business as long or longer than anyone else.

I hadn't used a Toshiba laptop now for over eight years, but I got a new one two weeks ago and it's great!

Here's some info on a Toshiba laptop from 1985 that you might find interesting. Sadly, I remember wanting a machine like this back then!!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toshiba_T1100

Memory: 256 kb, upgradable to 640k
    Screen Resolution: 640x200
    Weight: 4.1 kg

Hmmm. you didn't put that in the original comments.

You know, doesn't sound like a Toshiba issue. Sounds like whatever cut rate el cheapo shippers that Best Buy used to transfer it to the stores and around the country.....

Good to hear because they've always been reliable to me, and the company I work for uses Toshiba exclusively. (Or used to).

My brother was in shipping for some time. He told me horror stories.....
