I know this may have sounded like a stupid question. It's just that this is my first time having a laptop and im a total newbie to knowing its power resources. When I purchased my Toshiba M115-S3094, It camed with straight to the point manuals. None of the manuals didn't indicate points on what to expect. Like for example, it didnt even came with a notice like saying to not turn it on as soon as you open it jaja You know what I mean? The Toshiba manuals where just illustrations and facts. I always been a desktop user and its now time that i need this laptop and I sure do love it

1st question: If my battery dies, can I still have power if i connect the charger to the outlet?

2nd question: What is the battery life span of a 6 cell battery? a year? two years? or maybe more????

    1) Yes
    2) Your battery doesn`t just die. It degrades over time. Simply `deade batteries are rare.

    Answer to First Question:
Yes, you can still use your laptop on AC only power.
    Answer to Second Question:
Well batteries don't have a specific time that they wear out. Instead they wear out because they have been charged and recharged a specific amount of times. This link might be helpful. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_Ion_Battery

So in other words it all depends how many times you charge and discharge you battery. If your like me and do this every day your batteries charge will drop significantly in one year. However if you mainly keep your laptop plugged in you could easily get 2 or 3 years before you noticed a drop.

    Hope that helps some. :)

The elements in the battery lose their energy potential over time, even if they're not being used either. It also depends on usage and other factors like when you'll consider battery life too degraded.

To put things in perspective, I have a notebook from 1999 that has two batteries. They both still can power the notebook at least 75% as long as they did a long time ago. To be fair, I haven't used them much over the last 5 years though and that notebook was on AC power most of the time.

The general consensus is that you may be looking to add a new battery to your accessories in a year or two.

ooo, ok. Thanks for the facts.

So to get things straight, does this mean that I can use the laptop connected to the outlet without a battery attached?? Or am i wrong?

Yep, your notebook will just be a very portable machine with a 5-foot cord when you do!

My Toshiba is always on my desk so I run it on ac power all day, the battery isn't even installed.

Which is why I leave my battery in, even though it might not prolong the life of the battery, when I am connected via the AC adapter - just in case the power gets cut off due to an electrical storm, I still would have power and not lose my work.

A UPS can substitute for that (5min+ and the go and find where you placed the battery). Also protects you from possible electric surges.

I like this little built-in backup feature of a notebook battery.

Of course, this is the preferred alternative. But I don't like going through the hassle of taking the battery out and putting it back in. I guess I'd rather just buy a new battery when the time comes rather than bother with it all--but that's just personal preference. I'm on AC power most of the time anyway.

Wow, I mean, all my life I always tought that the battery is very important to have power inside the house. I was thinking that the power cord is just for charging purposes. I do understand that it is important to have the battery for taking the laptop anywhere you want. lol this is why I never bought a laptop before in my life thinking that it could only work with a battery and that batteries run out quickly. How stupid i was to be confused  I love this laptop even more than my desktop computer now.

You can purchase new batteries, but they are generally only expected to last 1-3 years. Read through the battery guide for more information.

    Hi,

I have had my m115-s3094 for a yr and 4 months now. All of a sudden there is this weird problem:

When i have the laptop running with the battery connected and with AC power the laptop shuts off completely, at random in a few minutes. However if i remove the battery and run it entirely on AC power it runs fine. Similarly when i run it with battery ONLY (no AC cord connected) it runs fine. Does this mean i have a bad battery that is having issues getting recharged?

    Thanks,
    -Raj
