Hello guys. I have the toshiba satellite A-500 17x and the inbuilt mic has been malfunctioning as of late.

I am not sure if this is a known issue or not, but I couldn't seem to find it anywhere online, but the microphone only seems to work if my display is pushed away from the keyboard. If the display is at the general angle you use when sat up, the microphone won't work at all.

    Strange issue.

Anyone else had the same problem?

Feedback/information related to this issue is appreciated!

You will probably have to open it up and have a root around, or if you're not comfortable with that, ask a competent friend/paid professional to do it. There is a useful thread about disassembling laptops at the top of the NoteBookReview Toshiba forum, or Google [your model] + service manual, [your model] disassembly, etc.

Since it's only apparent when tilted more towards you, it would suggest the connection on the motherboard or at the microphone itself is loose as pushing the screen away from you is relaxing the strain on the cable and re-making the connection.

With any luck, it will probably just need re-seating on the MB - however, if the cable is damaged or has worked loose of the microphone/camera assembly then you will probably have to replace the lot since it'll be hard wired into the microphone/camera assembly.

Alternatively, if that is going to be prohibitively expensive/too daunting, you could always buy a cheap and cheerful external USB microphone?

    Hope this helps!

Thanks for the very informative reply there mate. Yeah I will open it up most likely to see what's going on. And yeah, I should use an external mic anyway! Thanks again.

No worries :) You'll have to post back when you've got to the bottom of it and if it's something else entirely you can let me know - every day is a school day! Also, if anyone else has this issue, they can follow your procedure for rectification.
