I have an a15 satellite. Its about 4 yrs so I guess its time for crap to start failing. I was web browsing and the display started hazing over. Now I'm left with this spectrum of mush.

Ext monitor works fine with it. Has my lcd gone bad or is there something smaller I can replace to fix it?

I think your LCD's video cable is bad. The HP laptops at my school that had screen problems usually had this problem. If you want to take apart your laptop, you should make sure the display's ribbon cable is securely plugged in. If the screen stopped responding and took like 3 seconds to glaze over then it should be the cable. It could be the LCD panel, but I think it is the cable because the top 1/3 part of the screen is different than the lower 2/3 part in the photo. This, like I said, is probably a loose display cable which is easy to fix.
