    Hi guys,

First i would like to say that i am a big fan of this site, even though this is my first thread , i read the forum all the time :)

    I have a question please. Is the x200 / x205 laptop mxm upgradeable ?
I would like to buy the 21T model ( i live in romania, and i don't relay know how models work around the world :)
But before i buy it i would like to know if i have the possibility to upgrade the video card in the future from 8700GT to the next nvidia card ( 8800 gtx for example )

Can anyone help me with this question ?

    Thank you in advance,

    Best regards,
    Dumitra Claudiu

    Its not mxm

It uses interchangable modular video cards, however they are of own propietary format.

So you can theoretically upgrade, but only if you get an another card from another X200/x205 submodel.

what would you suggest ? To buy a laptop now with 8700GT or should i wait untill the 8800GTX is available ?

Do you know when the new graphic cards from Nvidia will be available ?

    Thank you in advance .

The new cards are always appearing. For example, I am pretty sure that just after 8800GTX actually arrive to the market, the new 9xxx generation will be announced and so on.

If you need laptop now, buy it now.
Thats unless of course you have some criterias on mimium graphics performance you require, on how much you are willing to wait an so on.

What do you mean "when new graphic cards will be available" - I guess the more proper question is when these laptop configurations will be available? Since NVidia does not sell the mobile chips so directly.

I guess realistic term is about begginning of the new year. At least if we assume that it will be the same delays as it was with previous generations

Let say it this way. If you are willing to wait for 1-1.5 months for a new laptops to be rolled out, wait.

I have Toshiba X200-15K and I'm not sorry for one moment that I didn't wait the new 8800GTX. The card I have (8700GT) performs well in every new game that I played.
You also have to consider that the new generation of mobile 8800GTX will arrive very late in Romania, like 8700GT did (3 or 4 months after the official release), so you might just wait in vain.

So it may be possible to upgrade to another graphics card if it came from the same type of laptop?

    Yes, thats right.
Video cards are interchangeable between different X200/X205 submodels.

So lets say toshiba gets a laptop with the 8800GTX and you have a 8700GT model. You can take the card out of the one with the 8800GT and put it in the one with the 8700GT? Do you think toshiba would do that for you?

Just to prove this I exchanged the motherboard from my son's x205-9349 laptop to my x205-sli1 and both are working just fine. I have the sli1 with a 9349 motherboard and sli works perfect too and my son's 9349 with the sli1 motherboard is also working perfectly. :D

Well, since any service center can order a video module at your expence, and replace an existing one with it, this is doable.

Hovewer even when its doable, this does not mean they will do it :)
All will depend on how persuasive you will be and how much good will they have :)

Hmm... If this is possible, Toshiba would be very wise to offer an upgrade program.

Offer an 8800m(SLI??) and Penryn processor upgrade at a reasonable rate (requiring service) and watch their x205 series keep flying long after their purchase and their service centers make a solid profit.

These are just for some people. Maybe some software conflicts.

I have not encountered any problems yet myself.

I run Vista32... and have no trouble whatsoever.

Update the video drivers, update Vista with the hotfixes, update DirectX, and you will be fine.
