Okay, some of you may remember me from three years ago, almost exactly, when I ordered my Qosmio X550-Q893, and the months leading up to that purchase where we all discussed the line ad nauseam. Anyway, Toshiba had a nice special that seems to be expiring today. I ended up going with their highest end model this time, for a little over $2K with sales tax, instead of the lower end one that can be gotten for $1,099.99 plus tax.
I really wanted an i7, though not for gaming, per se. I also use the laptop to render videos of my band's live shows, and on my current Qosmio, it just takes waaaaay too long. Plus the extra RAM will help as well (though arguably 32GB is seriously overkill!). Anyway, I should have the lappy in a few days and I will definitely write a review of it. Anyone else buying into the new Qosmio line?
Here is the summary of features of the top-o-the-line Qosmio I ordered:

In all honesty, I think the lower end one is a powerhouse, too, and I may not need all the features of this one. I deliberated long and hard on this, because I really wanted to save the money. But one thing I love is that the one I bought has the THREE YEAR waranty as part of the special, whereas the Qosmio I have now only has one. This was bad for me because I had several problems along the way, including slow downs and intermittent, random shut-offs that the three year warranty would have been really nice for. As such, I never fixed this laptop and am upgrading instead. Truth be known, every gaming laptop I have ever owned has had some trouble that the longer warranty would have been a blessing for. When I crunched all the numbers, it would have cost me upwards of $1,700.00 just to have the stuff I wanted to add on, bare minimum. I really need the Blu-Ray writer because I decided to save all the raw video files from my band on blu-ray discs rather than the continuous burning up of hard drive space I have been doing for the past three years. Either way, I think I made the right choice.

Hey, how did you get the 3 year warranty free on special. I dont see that. I have been thinking about this machine as well. Thanks

I think this is a great laptop, though I do have some niggles: First, I really miss the 18.4" screen of my older Qosmio, and yes, it is noticeable. Second, I think that 32 GB of RAM is just pointless at this point, and I would have preferred to have paid the $300.00 or so less for, say 16GB. Third, and this is really dumb in my opinion: A 5400 speed HD on their highest end machine? Really? I get that the SSD is nifty, and 256GB is no slouch, but, what? They couldn't spring for the extra $20.00 (hell, I would have paid it!) for a 7200 1TB drive? I get that the lower end machines with the i5 and 4 or 8 GB RAM, no SSD, no Blu-Ray reader or writer, and the one year warranty have the 5400 drive. But really! lol Still, great machine! -
Hey, xinquisitor666x, I just looked on Toshiba's site and apparently the same model as mine is still available, with the three year warranty and all the bells and whistles. The only difference I see is that the lappy is $500.00 off the supposed retail price instead of the $600.00 off it was when I ordered it. So you would get the same warranty and machine but for $100.00 more.
Honestly, I would wait, though. If my X505-Q893 wasn't prone to random shut downs and a few other issues making it impractical for gaming (until repaired) I would not have bought this laptop now. I think that waiting until the holiday shopping season starts, which is really just a month + a week away, would be wise. I bet that you could snag a Qosmio for a better deal than I got on this one, or one of the other offerings from last week, on Black Friday or during the holiday shopping season.
I remember a few weeks after I bought my Qosmio in 2010, Amazon had a lightning deal for like $200.00 less than what I paid. -
I read your thread and was wondering if you have received your laptop and when you were going to post your review. I am also looking at possibly buying this laptop, so I am really interested in reading your review.. Regarding the 3 year warranty, that is something I always purchase when I buy a new laptop if it is not included. For the couple of hundred bucks you spend, it is surely worth it 3 years down the road. Of course the laptop would need to be a high end unit to justify the purchase.
Thanks!
Just Ordered the Qosmio X70-AST2GX1 Laptop!
