So I took the plunge - went into Circuit City today and bought the Toshiba Satellite U305 ($1099, 160GB HD, 2GB RAM, 5400/1.73Ghz etc).
So far almost everything seems really great. It takes barely a few seconds to boot on and off (which is one of the greatest things, not having to sit around once you decide to turn your computer off), and it's beautiful and there don't seem to be any problems with keyboard or screen.
One (big) issue though - the powercord doesn't seem to charge the battery! The "plugged in" light flickers on and off, and the computer says it's connected but not charging. I've tried different sockets, unplugging/reconnecting etc, and can't seem to fix this problem.
Any suggestions? I'll make sure to keep anybody updated on how the rest of the machine is running - feel free to shoot me q's. Thanks.

I'd return it to Circuit City and get a replacement one. There's something wrong with the wiring.

So frustrating!

Does the keyboard fell mushy or loose to you?
Do you like the warm palmrest?
Can you turn off the Toshiba word? It seem to lite up and annoying when you watch movies. -
I picked the U305-S5097 up from Fry's about a week ago for $800, that model only has 1GB but it didn't cost much to upgrade to 2GB and now fits my needs perfectly.
I agree something must be wrong with your charger or notebook, mine does indicate charging when it's doing so.
So far I'm really happy with it, it has the balance of size, performance, features, and cost I was looking for. Yes the palmrest seems overly warm and I know about that before buying it. If I was going to be doing a lot of typing that may have been a concern but I generally am using the mouse most of the time (external mouse) so is not a big deal. The keyboard does have a little too much flex as others have indicated but it doesn't seem bothersome, and again I don't type that much on it. -
