Have you checked what's running the in background? And how much resources, it's using?
-
Love it with the SSD, everythings running smoothly and fairly cool as well. I'll try some lightroom 3 stuff when I ge ta chance but that'll have to wait since I wont be home for a week or so. -
Hi guys, still undecided on which Laptop to buy. I'm undecided between this Toshiba r835 and the Sony Vaio SB.
I just wanted to ask, is it easy to upgrade the RAM and add SSD? I'm not sure I'll need an SSD but I'd really like to upgrade the tam to 8gb once I bought it. Is that easy enough to do?
Also, with just the integrated card (as opposed to the Vaio SB discrete) can I still do some light videoediting? -
Hope this helps your decision somewhat, never had a laptop run this good but never had a SSD in one either so I'm biased. -
So I just got a my R835-P55 today. Till now everything seems fine. The only thing I dont seem to like too much is the touchpad. Any tips on how to improve the sensitivity? I installed the latest drivers but still doesnt seem great, the fine movements seem to be not so great, seems jittery...
Also if I buy an SSD, how do I install Windows 7 on that? If I have it installed in this HDD, how will I be able to install it again with the same product key in a new HDD? Same goes with programs like Office etc. which use product keys.
Thanks -
I have no issues with the touchpad at all. It was actually one of the better touchpads I have seen in laptops. It has been really responsive and two finger scroll all work very well. The only issue I have is that the touchpad buttons are really stiff and hard to press.
Go into mouse option in control panel and go to synaptics tab and you will be able to set sensitivity and various other settings. Play around with them and find the best feel for you. -
The sensitivity of touchpad you can modify from drivers. Look on the settings of the touchpad. -
I have a question regarding WiDi 2.0 on the R835. I bought the netgear ptv2000 adapter and the performance has been real disappointing till now.
Out of the box, WiDi didn't work, I had to spend sometime to update the graphics drivers and the WiDi software and then I was able to connect to the adapter. It works for a while (sometimes 20min, most of the time less then a minute) and then the adapter drops the connection.
Not been able to figure out why my connection keeps getting dropped. Any ideas?
Thanks -
anybody know how to do a bluetooth mod for this unit?

I've had the R835-P56X for about 3 weeks now. It is a great laptop as far as I can tell, but it does run hot. When playing a game (torchlight) or running multiple 1080p videos (I know there's no real world reason to do this) the cpu temps will easily reach the mid 90s, recorded by CPU ID and speedfan.
That is really high for playing torchlight on medium settings at 1200 x 800. I've played this game on an ion netbook with higher settings.
I'm currently using a T410s with a first generation core i5 at work and it doesn't get anywhere near that hot. I can only get it to low 80s with a full blown stress test that maxes CPU while playing multiple 1080p flash videos.
I notice these high temps mainly only occur if the max frequency in the performance monitor goes 100%+, the problem is this happens easily and often. If I change the power management options to adjust cooling by lowering the processor speed the performance hit is too much to even watch one hd video at reasonable quality.
Anyone else running into these temp issues? -

Any success with people installing a SATA III 6Gbps SSD on the R835 and getting 600MB p/s speed?? I've heard people having issues getting the SATA III speed but have also heard some BIOS tinkering may enable the SATA III speed ports.

How is the R835 compared to R830?
I think the R835 is sold as Satellite R830 here in Norway, which makes things confusing (but that's just how Toshiba is).
The problem is, I want a matte screen, which the R835 does not have, right?
But the difference in price doesn't justify the screen and small CPU upgrade,
so what else is different?
R835: 1150$
R830: 2200$
edit: Mail from Toshiba: R830 comes with Win7 Pro, fingerprintreader, 1 year extra warranty and lots of extra software.... -
Thank you Tlordon for the information about heatsink materials
Hey guys:

or someone ...
Please, can anyone confirm if the heatplate and the heatsink (fins) of the model R835-P56x, are made from:
• aluminum (silver)? or
• copper? -
Anybody have any problems with outputting the display through the HDMI port? I did a clean install with all the necessary drivers listed in the thread and I am outputting to a 2nd monitor through hdmi. Is there something I'm missing?
Tried the FN + F5 tried Winkey+P. The monitor works beautifully through hdmi with my other laptop so I don't see why it won't detect it nor output to it. -
So I finally got the chance to open up the Toshiba R835-P56X... Here are some things that I saw:
a) The Fins attached to the heatsink are aluminum just like the P50X. They don't look like copper (I also have pics).
b) The optical drive is SATA. So using a hdd caddy with SATA may be possible.

I have the ability to look up parts and see what models they are used in. If someone can give the part number for a model with copper I can check where it is and isn't used. I need the number that is like PT324U-? not R83?-? I got the Best Buy R835-P50X and I am investigating a Blu-Ray replacement. The main problem is the drive in the R835 is so slim it doesn't have top cover. I am not sure there are any Blu-Ray drives that small. I am also considering testing swapping the 802.11n/WiMax for a 802.11n/BT card. Not sure if the antenna cabling is the same though.

Also the ram modules in my laptop did not look like they matched. (i.e. different colors)
It looked exactly like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GD1o9qM2N3o&feature=player_detailpage#t=657s -
Can someone confirm which touchpad it has, is it Synaptics and does it work well? My T135 has a craptastic Synaptics touchpad that due to a poor design, it just wigs out if I use the click buttons.
Does the Protege have that issue? -

My p56x just arrived and I am 95% sure the fins are aluminium (aluminum). There is some black grille over it so it is difficult to see. Thomas please update us if there are any ne developments. Thanks

Now did anybody ever solve the bug where the HDMI port on the P56X won't output a signal... -
Has anyone tried to install an mSATA SSD? I ordered one today, without actually being able to find if the R835-P55 has mSATA.
-
I don't believe the Toshibas have mSATA.
-
Best Buy's website now shows the P70 and the 50 is no longer on their site. I guess the reviews for the 50 is also gone. I don't know if the stores are carrying the P70 (i5) or still the 50 (i3) though. Not only that but I think the i5 P70 is lower price than the previous i3 model.
-
Do you know for sure? I wasn't able to find any info about it.

I owned the Portégé R830-112 for 10 days but had to send it back due to the following reasons:
1. My fins were also aluminium not copper. Due to the stupid fan design (pumping fresh air through the bottom of the notebook) you couldn't use it very well on your lap or some other uneven ground even when just doing light office work. The fan wasn't very quiet as well.
2. At least when looking in the device manager or using some hardware identification software it seemed as if the Portege was still using the defective B2 stepping which is plain stupid in a device with more than 2 possible sata devices.
3. The Port0 was only working as a Sata II (3gb) and not as a Sata III (6gb) port which is kind of disappointing in a SandyBridge laptop and was rendering my OCZ Vertex 3 kind of useless.
4. Some minor bugs with the WLAN adapter. When WLAN was switched on the PC would randomly freeze for 30seconds-1minute and then resume normal operation. It didn't depend on whether you actually had connection running or not, the mere activation of WLAN was enough to trigger the bug.
This was my first and last Toshiba laptop!.
I now wait for the arrival of my Sony Vaio SA and hope that the Sony doesn't have the same issues. I hope you have more luck with your Portege. -

did anyone here get the unit from microsoft? the R835-P55x? does it have aluminum or copper heatsink? thanks

i want to buy two.. like others the only thing im worried about is the heatsink
-
I have seen conflicting reports on the SATA ports being SATA III (6Gbps) but the latest one I've see suggests at least some models support SATAIII. The motherboard definitely supports it so its mainly an issue of the firmware I believe.
Also it looks like a Sony SA is considerably more (MSRP $1650) and weighs another 0.5lb (3.8 lbs total) but does have dedicated graphics and a blu-ray player. For most I suspect the additional $650 will be the harder to come to terms part! -
It could have been a firmware issue with the Sata ports but there wasn't any newer firmware available. So I had no way of changing anything. I was more concerned with the B2 stepping issue and the heatsink.
Concerning the price tag: I had to pay 1500 for the R830 and now I pay exactly the same for my Sony Vaio SA including additional sheet battery and 8GB of ram. So the choice wasn't that hard. Yes it weighs a bit more but I don't mind the additional weight (my old convertible Fujitsu T5010 weighs a lot more and it's ok with me). -
I have tried out one in SATURN ( german electronics shop). The fan makes sometimes annoying noise but usually if the device isnt under load its halfway quiet. However even my L650 runs quieter ( passive when surfing
). The laptop is pretty worse designed and IT HAS OVERHEATING problems. It wont shut down due to the heat but its not nice to use it when the fan is running the whole time.
Actually we have today 35C outside and my laptop did run passive in the garden. I cant imagine how loud this one will be.

Did you check if your HDMI port works?
-
-
-
-
Yea I tried it with an HDTV and it worked and detected fine. Guess it's something with my HDMI->DVI cable I'm using on an old 24".
-
I couldn't find any way to make the Toshiba Power Saver and Eco icons disappear from notification taskbar so I ended up uninstalling the entire Toshiba Added Value package out of frustration.
Also, since I installed the HDD in place of the ODD, I wasn't sure what to do with the Toshiba Power Saver icon whose only option was "Optical Drive Auto Lock - Enable/Disable". What does that even do? Would it shutoff the power to my HDD or something thinking its an ODD, since I have it connected to the ODD SATA cable?
edit: Also just tried plugged it into my HDTV via the HDMI port. Worked flawless. -
When youre installing an HDD into an ODD drive you will get sometimes errors like this. A clean W7 install is much better. I recommend unpacking the TOSHIBA installers and install only the .inf files. TOSHIBA´s applications often make enormous problems. However i dont think that you´re HDD will get no Power-SPLY anymore.

It's been over a month since the last post from tlordon regarding Toshiba and the copper / aluminum situation. He hasn't posted since. I wonder if he just sold his R835.
-
I can appreciate the disappointment of not getting the heatsink material you believe was in the build, i.e., alum vs copper and I get that copper is probably better as a heat transfer material but in this application (R835) does the alum heatsink work? Have there been reports of overheating and motherboard/componet damage as a result? I have an opportunity to buy a R835-P56x from OfficeMax for $650+tax and while the possible "bait and switch" in this matter doesn't bother me, I am far more interested in the actual performance of the computer - does it hold up? does it over heat? will it break in relatively normal use?
I bought an HP TX2000Z 3 years ago only to become aware of an over heating problem with the NVIDA chip and the cooling system - it finally affected my computer. HP never acknowleged the problem with the TX series but did with some other lines. So I'm concerned with whether this line of computers can handle the heat with it's present construction. Any real examples with the R835? Anything broken from overheating? -
jkn1946, the R835 is new, it just came out this Spring, so as far as long term reliability, there really isn't any. I think the best we can guess is how the R7XX series has been, since this is suppose to be the replacement for that series, I believe.
The price at OM is nice except there's the tax and for some, it bumps the total higher than the Amazon with free XBOX deal that's available for students.
Just got the new R835-P50X
