Just bought at Costco for 800$. Toshiba P755 15.6" 8GB RAM Blu-Ray Laptop Core i7-2630QM 2.0GHz with Turbo Boost. Any owners here who can share some info on performance, accessories etc. Costco offers 2 years warranty as well as 90 days return policy. They also throw in a 1 year free subscription to Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 worth 20$

Any interesting upgrade/accessories that i can add? I have some $$ to burn

    Hello,

I assume you are talking about the one from Costco Online, the P755-S5276, sold only at Costco and has the $150 promotion off the $950 retail.

I received one a couple of weeks ago and so far it has been great for a non gamer like me. (The machine uses the integrated video so it would not be a good choice for hard core gaming performance.)

The only accessory I have in hand so far is a Targus laptop case from Walmart. It is a classic clam shell design with the pouch on one side. It is a thin design with room for some papers and cords, etc in the pouch. It also has other slots for DVDs, pens, etc. It is black nylon like fabric. The price was only 20 bucks, which is great for a Targus. There is no extra room on the sides after placing the laptop in the case, but there is enough at the top for the power supply and cords. The front of the tag says Targus Classic Laptop Clamshell up to 16". The number on the back of the tag is TBC054US with a barcode of 0 92636 25003 4

Looks like it is a store only item:

Walmart.com: Targus 16" Classic Case: Computers

The machine has built-in USB 3.0 so I have on order from Staples a Western Digital Elements external hard drive USB 3.0 750GB. This drive does not need a separate power supply. Price (before tax) for the moment is $69.99 after subtracting a $5 coupon that they e-mailed me, free shipping.

The next thing I would like to do is get a hybrid 7200 RPM hard drive. I am still looking into that. An example would be a Seagate Momentus XT, but it is only up to 500GB and I not sure about the reliability of Seagate drives. A higher RPM drive with some solid state storage should give it some more snap.

I am also considering the 12 cell larger capacity battery and an aftermarket AC/DC power supply.

Oh, I also picked up a Windows 7 book (Windows 7 Bible) since this is my first Windows 7 machine.

Hope your new machine is working out for you.

A nice mouse to use with it perhaps? Maybe some headphones? I'm currently using a Logitech M510 with my computer and it's pretty nice. I got it for about $20 to $25 at Best Buy during their Back to School sale. It replaced my Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500 which felt a little tiny to me.

Actually, the Costco only model I mentioned earlier has a Blu-Ray player/DVD burner instead of just a DVD unit. That model is the P755-S5276. It currently has a $150 discount, making it cheaper than the unit without the Blu-Ray.

    Costco - Toshiba P755 15.6" Blu-Ray Laptop Core i7-2630QM 2.0GHz with Turbo Boost

The model in the other link with the std DVD is a P755-S5393.

These models do not have a separate video "card". The graphics are integrated with the processor by Intel. This is one of the new features of the second generation Core iX Sandy Bridge processor line. It is fine for general applications, but would not satsify a hard core gamer. Toshiba does offer other configurations of the series that include a separate nvidia graphics card. There is no way to add a card later.

The addition of a mouse is a good idea!

Good catch Bruce. I overlooked that Costco had 2 models of the P755 (weird that the upgraded Bluyray model is cheaper :D ).

My guess is that Toshiba must be passing on some sort of promotion to Costco for that particular model. It made it a good value for a Core i7 machine with a Blu-Ray player.

These machines ship direct from Toshiba, not a Costco distibution center. Costco takes the order, then sends it on to Toshiba. That takes about a day. In my case, for six bucks more in shipping, Toshiba sends it out next day UPS air. The machine was delivered in two business days direct from Toshiba.

Hi Folks I just ordered a P755- S5276 from Costco as well, for the features I could not beat the price. Foolishly I just ordered a seagate hybrid hd for it.
I am looking for a screen protector now, and can't find one.

Tracman ..... Hopefully you will be one more happy owner. It seems like a good value for a powerful general purpose laptop.

    Some quick points:

    1) It comes with Windows 7 Service Pack One and Internet Explorer 8. You will want to go to the Microsoft Windows Update page and apply the updates. It took me many passes before I got them all. I also updated to Internet Explorer 9.

    2) One of the updates is a driver from JMicron that updates the card reader driver. You have to have a memory card (SD, SDHC) inserted in the card reader before running the updates, else the update will fail with a non-descript error.

    3) If it looks like the updates are hung up (no disk drive activity), it may be because one of the updates is waiting on a response. The message box may be displayed "behind" the Window Update Status window no you can not see it. Minimize the Windows Update Status window to see if it is waiting on a response from you.

    4) It comes with the Microsoft Office Starter edition Installation file which consists of Word and Excel. Click on Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office to install. Starter edition is a reduced functionally version of Word and Excel. It does not have all the file formats or advanced features, but should do the basics. It does not have Power Point, so no viewer. Google "Microsoft Power Point Viewer download" and a link to the Micorsoft down load page shoud be at or near the top to get a free copy of the Power Point Viewer.

    5) Creation of a recovery disk takes three double layer DVDs or 5 single layer DVDs.

    6) The bios should be the most current from this summer.

    7) The disk image appears to be created about 4/15/11. Toshiba has updated many of it's programs since then. Run the Toshiba Service Station pgm to get some of them. It misses many, so you will have to get them off the Tosbhiba Support web page.

You indicated some regrets on ordering the Seagate drive. I was wondering what your cocerns are?

Let us know how the new machine works out for you.

Thanks for the great infomation, I already own windows 7 ultimate, it didn't work out in my xp desktop, kept locking up, but it should work well on the new one. I don't know if installing a new hdd will void my warranty or not? Is windows office startup a permanant program? I have office 2007 program, not current buy I can't use half the stuff on there anyway.

If the HDD bay is easily accessible [remove bottom cover and replace]; then if a problem arises then you can just switch the original Harddrive back and send it off to the repair depot. As far as Toshiba outright voiding warranties if the Harddrive is replaced; I don't know.

If it is not easily accessible [remove keyboard and rip apart machine], then I would advise against it.

Like what Bruce said, make sure you make your recovery discs. If you do have a problem and you have a custom install of Windows on your machine, Toshiba will most likely require you to revert back to their OEM installation; more of a level 1 tech thing.

Good luck and keep us informed.

That sounds like a good machine. I just asked about this particular model in another thread when this one might have been more appropriate. :)

My budget isn't $800 (yet?) although I wish it was. I only need/want the Intel HD 3000 graphics so it's enough graphics power (not using the laptop for gaming).

So far, my budget is only $500 but if I can save up more, I'd consider this one. Haven't read any bad stuff about it yet.

I wanted to get a laptop at least a bit more powerful than my current Q6600 desktop (which I'm looking into selling). The cpu in this laptop looks like it would provide that. :)

I'll try to find this thread again.

I was just looking into the cheaper version. Being offered by Staples for $600. What are the Costco benefits?

$600 is a great price for that model; might be worth getting at Staples.

As for Costco, they offer 2 year warranty, 90 days no questions asked return policy, and FREE technical support for the lifetime of the product [service called Costco Concierge Service; mind you repairs only last for first 2 years, but after that they will still help you troubleshoot via phone].
