    Here is my issue.

I recently bought a Toshiba L35-S2366 laptop. It came with 512Mb RAM. I purchased 2 1G module to replace the 512MB. I put in the single 1G module and that worked fine. When I put in both the 1G modules, the system starts up, but then it gets stuck in "windows is loading files...". I tried the 1G modules separately to make sure both of them work and they do. I also tried the 1G with the 512M and this time the system would start up but only recognize 1G not the 1.5G. Also, when I put in both the modules and start up and go to BIOS, the BIOS does say that it is 2G. So seems like BIOS recognizes it, but the OS does not?? The OS installed is Windows Vista Basic.

    Please help.

Thanks Jon. I did read your thread. I purchased the memory as a kit and they are identical, so a little different problem than yours. Also, the BIOS shows the 2G when I do an F2 and look at the settings. But after that is where things fail...I get a "Windows is loading files..." and it just stays there for ever.

i just bought the same notebook and am thinking of upgrading
did u try running the memory check option of vista? safe mode?

lastly, u can try running linux to see if it is a windows specific problem.

waiting anxiously to see if ur experiment worx

I am really pleased to find your problem on his forum, you are not alone!

I likewise have purchased the same machine (Office Depot) and have brought 2, 1G memory modules to upgrade from the standard 512MB.

With both the new modules in the machine (2GB) I get the message:-

" The file header checksum does not match the computed checksum".

The BIOS recognises that the machine has 2GB of RAM but the operating system is objecting. The machine works with either of the new modules (1GB) or with either module plus the original RAM (1.5GB) but not with 2GB. All the working options pass the VISTA memorary test and the BIOS recognises the correct value at each option. I have re-flashed the BIOS to make sure that this was not a problem.

Regret I also do not have a solution as the Toshiba Technical Support has given up on my problem. They claim there is no recorded incident of this and want me to purchase memory from Toshiba to prove that the fault is in the memory I have purchased.

Is the answer to go back to XP?

    try this
    http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/Ou/?p=399

also, try running linux (say ubuntu) from a bootable cd, it is easy, just download the Live/One ISO that comes on a CD not dvd. burn it. boot from it, if it runs fine, it is a vista problem. but you do want to do the above memtest to be sure.

I have the same problem. Just got off the phone w/Toshiba Tech support and they told me to bring it in to one of their authorized repair centers for them to troubleshoot. Told them it was a matched pair and that each stick would work in either slot fine, but when both are installed, I get the error "The file header checksum does not match the computed checksum." Can't be without my notebook anytime soon but I'll post what happens as soon as I bring it in, hopefully w/in a week or so.

I took the advice and loaded ubuntu which worked to start with before crashing. Using the memory checker have diognosed one of the sticks as faulty which I am under the process of returning for a replacement.

The difference is that ubuntu allowed me to test the memory before crashing where VISTA prevents you even starting with a suspect memory module.

Great joy as my replacement memory arrived!

Big disapointment as it still does not work. This time I get a blue screen indicating a component failure.

I have tested the 2GB of memory with the memory checker and it passes all the tests - over to you Toshiba?

I'm glad I ran across this thread. I have a very similar problem with my L35-2366

Bought a 2x1Gb PNY package that was on sale at CompUSA. Either stick alone works and passes memcheck. Either stick also works with the original 512mb stick.

With both 1Gb sticks at once, I get:
stick 1 in slot A, stick 2 in slot B --> no boot, no beep codes, no BIOS, no nothing

stick 2 in slot A, stick 1 in slot B --> a beep code and the "The file header checksum does not match the computed checksum" error when it tries to boot into Vista ("knoppix noagp" hangs also).

I assumed it was a timing issue with the cheap sticks and I was trying to decide whether to return the memory and get a better brand (Kingston). But it sounds like it's a bigger problem than just the memory sticks. I guess I'll keep running on 1.5Gb and wait and see if there is a BIOS update later on.

PS: just saw this link also, where the OP had success returning PC5300 for PC4200 (even though in theory they should be backward compatible)

I got the exactly same problem with my new L35-S2366 (Win Vista) purchased through Office Depot.

I just bought Crucial Kit CT2KIT12864AC667 (1GBx2, 200-pin, PC2-5300, CL=5, Unbuffered, NON-ECC, DDR2-667, 1.8V, 128Meg x 64). Either stick alone works fine and also works with the original 512mb stick. But when I put both sticks in, the laptop gives a blank screen.

The same Kit has no problems in my DELL Inspiron 6400 laptop. Put them in, turn on the computer, and BIO shows 2gb right away. After XP-home loaded, the system info confirms the 2gb mem.

Toshiba tech support told me either to return the laptop or take it to their service center for a checkup. Either options doesn't sound very appealing to me. I truly believe Toshiba is the fault of the whole thing. They should really look into this thing themselves and find a solution. I know Toshiba had lots of problems with their laptops in the 90's. L35-S2366 is my first ever purchase of a Toshiba laptop and probably my last if the manufacture doesn't care.

I had this issue with my L100. Exactly the same, each 1GB sodimm works independantly but not together. I have no idea why as my laptop is supposed to be able to handle up to 4GB. My theory is that it could be the gpu taking shared ram and having an issue with dual channel?

All right, I brought it in to an authorized service center and they'll look at it on Monday. I'll let you guys know what's up when I get it back next week.

I had to try 3 different types of matched memory before I found a set of 2x1G sticks that worked in dual channel mode. IMHO the Tosh is a little bit sensitive to memory brands.

So I just got my L35 back from the service center and they installed a new MB. Unfortunately, the Crucial brand memory that I bought is not compatible (using two 1gig sticks) with this notebook because it still doesn't work with the new MB. They recommended Kingston brand if I still wanted 2gig. Putting one stick works fine and so I'm running just 1gig now, will probably sell the other on Craigslist or something. BTW, it took this long to get back because the MB's are in short supply from Toshiba.

    Hi Everybody;

I have same kind of problem. I bought my toshiba L35-S2151 from best buy in Nowenber, 2006. I have windows XP on it, i didn't upgrade to Vista. I bought a 1gb ram from crucial, and it arrived today.

My problem is the windows don't see both of the ram at the same time.
When I run the program of the CPU-Z ( http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php) i see that I have two slot installed with 512mb ram and 1gb ram in my computer but windows just see as 1gb ram in place of 1.5bg.

    from CPU-Z i get:
