I'm an experienced tech here with a problem

ok so I have this L45-S7423 someone gave me. Put XP on it. little peeved at the fact toshiba changed the hwid of the wifi card to 8197 so I had to hack the inf of a rtl 8187 to get it installed. Xp worked fine but the FN+F7/F6 brightness buttons would not work, even after installing the ATK 0100 driver. Closing the lid to initiate sleep mode worked just fine.

so I thought I would take a shot at win7. Put Win7 64 bit in there and everything is fine, even dimms when I unplug the charger. But the lid close will not initiate sleep mode. And before you think this is a windows setting issue I already checked that, hell I even set it to shut down to make sure this wasn't a S3 problem. It has to do with the ATK driver and the ACPI lid devices. Whats funny (ok not funny, annoying) is I can hit the power button to put it into sleep that way, and opening the lid will actually wake it up. Something going on here. and hours of research has turned up nothing

Ok. I re-installed XP and I realized at least one of the reasons why closing the lid worked. I put an Asus ATK 0100 on it (putting toshibas would not cause the lid to close and shut down). Asus's also puts up a brightness/volume OSD indicator, dosen't work for brightness, but does work for sound, and this DOES initiate sleep/wake. I'm tempted to try win7 again so I can see if I can find an asus atk0100 for win7, the brightness functions should work and the shut lid functions too if I find the right driver. I think. I'm not sure. Toshiba sucks for these vista laptops. If anyone can guide me toward better solutions that would be GREATLY appreciated

not a bad laptop performance wise. I'm going to get a core 2 duo T7300 off ebay and pop it in if I can get everything straightened out (saw the microcode for it in the 2.0-and 1.60 bios update binary for this model)

I've also been tempted to get one of these suckers:
    toshiba L45 5200 battery | eBay

a 5200mah battery for this thing. this battery is truly f'd (dead in 10 mins)

I've had mixed results with ebay chinese batteries

    EDIT:
    ahhhhh. its working now.

    How?

well I installed XP and it was the same thing this time. No sleep. Then I realized when I first installed XP I installed an ATK 0100 from ASUS. I put 7 back on, found the atk 0100 for the G50 series asus laptop, and boom. It even installed an OSD when I mute, change brightness, or do any other function. But since this is a toshiba, the 'brightness' would only go up half way on the brightness marker. I took the osd programs out of startup. Then it used an older OSD (the one from XP). I actually had to find the program files/asus folder and rename the osd.exe so it would not load. Brightness, sound, mute work just fine with the FN keys now, as does the lid sleep trigger

Asus could of been a about it and checked hardware and give me a big finger on this software but no such thing happened. thank you asus

would still like to know what you guys think about the chinese cheap batteries on ebay for something like that. I *could* get a 4400mah toshiba oem (extended-this is a 4000mah) in here for, well, more than I want to pay

    thanks
