My L500 pauses on bootup at a black screen With a Message to press F2 To enter Setup or F12 to go to the Boot Menu.

I press F12 and select the hard drive and it boots up fine.

It used to go automatically to WIN 7.

I have tried bootrec /fixmbr command (it said it was successful.

I notice the first partition is the one that is active. (I don't know which one should be.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Check the boot order in BIOS (F2).
It's remotely possible that HDD is not the first one in line and that's why you have to choose it manually each time.
If that happens to be the case- change the boot order so that HDD would be first and remember to save and exit (not just exit) BIOS.
