The backlight in the lcd of my qosimo f55 occasionally would flicker and or dim and if I gently hit the side of the lcd, usually it would stop flickering or go back to the original brightness. Sometimes the backlight would go completely off (I can still dimly make out what is on the screen) and would have to close the lcd for a second for it to turn back on.
What are the chances that it's due to a loose cable where I can fix by opening the laptop up? The generous one year limited warranty just expired a few months ago so I think it's my only option, but I don't really want to attempt to open it up if it's likely to be a more serious problem that I can't fix

I think you will need to take it apart and refit the cable!
Here Dude55 writes about similar problem like yours and he got it fixed by opening the machine!

Seems like your backlight might be going bad. One of the things I don't like about Toshiba is that they still use CFCL lamps in their LCD screens which are prone to go bad after 3 years.
