Hi, I'm trying to bring my old Portege 7020CT back up to working conditions. Everything seems to be working except for the LCD screen, let me describe the problem (it may have a common name but I'm not aware of it).
Imagine the screen is broken up into three equally sized horizontal bands. The top band works perfectly fine, while the middle band seems to pick a row of pixels (maybe the bottom row of pixels of the middle band?) and repeat them vertically for the entire band. The bottom band is the worst, however, basically looking like some grunge art, very dark gray with some rainbow pixel blotches around the edges. So essentially, the LCD screen is only 1/3 usable, though secondary output to a monitor works perfectly fine.
The thing is, I could squeeze the bezel on the left side (if it was open) and the middle band would typically fix itself, and sometimes the bottom band too, as long as I was holding it in the right place and with the right amount of force. I decided to take apart the laptop screen tonight (basically all or nothing at this point) to see if I could spot a loose cable or anything else suspicious. Nothing jumped out at me, though it is much easier to squeeze the screen now to correct it.
Generally applying pressure anywhere along the bottom band left side (facing the screen) of the bezel fixes it, but only while holding it. There is some circuitry there, but nothing that jumps out at me (I'm a software guy, not hardware).
Does anyone have any tips on how to permanently fix this? It seems like it is definitely fixable since the screen works perfectly with the right pressure. I can provide pictures if it would help. I've been shopping Ebay for new screens and was outbid barely the other day... Most of the complete units on there have broken screens anyway. I'm not particularly attached to this laptop, it's more that I already own it and if I can fix it for real cheap or free, the better.
Thanks in advance.
