I searched this forum, noting the large number of problems like I have had. Got my first Toshiba in June of 02. After three trips in for repair - the last one of which was three months in a holding pattern while waiting for a backordered part - I firmly requested a new laptop. I mean, really, who can live without a laptop for that kind of time? Anyway, they no longer had the model I owned - of course - and so "upgraded me" to a P35 Satellite 17" widescreen. It is a beast of a thing, more suitable as a desk top replacement than an actual notebook...it weight 14 lbs! Anyway, I got this replacement Toshiba in October of 04 and it is now in for its 3rd repair! It has had two LCD replacements, a replacement of the power inverter for the LCD display, cleaning, greasing of the CPU, etc. This time the hard drive croaked. The tech says he needs me to send him the recovery CD to finish the install, but I have NO IDEA where it is. (In addition to major laptop issues, I've moved three time and gotten divorced and moved two kids in and out to and from college. And you wonder why I can't find it? Thought it was in the brief case, but no...) Anyway, I contacted Toshiba and they won't send me one without me paying for it and I am - understandibly - unwilling to give them another cent. I've owned two Toshibas for a total of 4 years and they have been in for repair for 7 months of that time - that's 20%!!!

Suggestions? I have updated all the software and drivers since purchase, but I am told that the hard drive partitioning requires the recovery CD. Any help would be gratefully accepted. Thanks!

Hmm, a Toshiba tech should have copies of a volume license installation cd. You may lose your saved data and a few programs, but he should be able to recover your OS. Also what about the product key label? did you computer not come with one?

The Tech is at CompUSA, it is out of manufacturer warrantee. All the info on the HD is already gone - they put in a new one. They backed it up onto a portable HD B4 replacing the bad one. Yeah, I have a Windows cert # and one for all of the other software too: Office 2003 Pro, Adobe Creative suite, WordPerfect X3, Paint Shop Pro, etc. I was told that the recovery CD is needed to partition the drive more than to install the software, OS or drivers. Any idea if that is true? Might there be another way?
