I have an A60-S159 (Celeron D 2.8Ghz, HD 60GB), yes a little bit noisy... mainly for the fan and some for HD. The unit gets some hot, nothing to worry about. The display is bright and really it´s no a thunder but it works fine, including Wi Fi... 7.7 pounds: well, it is a desktop replacement really. Not for video intensive applications or games...

I had a Toshiba Satellite A60-102 and was making an irritating noise. Mainly was the fan which started working even when the processor was not on a high load.

Some Toshibas have had some sound problems and heat problems. The sound cant really be defeated. It is due to the fan turning on when some would argue is not necessary. The fan keeps your computer running well, so i would sacrifice silence for performance.
IF the hard drive is making strange noises....get it checked out! The last thing you need is a platter thats out of whack or read/write heads that are out of alignment. I dont know if the Satellite hard drives have SMART, but i would get abnormal sounds checked out right away.
    Good luck[8D]
