Hi there,
Couple of weeks back, I got myself a brand new Toshiba Equium laptop.
Everything works fine except for something that I can describe as a system beep, which occurs randomly (at least looks like that).
Did anyone see this before?![]()
Cheers,
Paul

Is it a subtle beep, or is it a clear, audibe beep? I've heard cases of laptops beeping due to users overloading the keyboard and when it overheats, but not randomly.
-
Thanks,
Paul -
Some of my electronics beep when i use them for a long time might be heat
-
Is there any way to shut it up? Apart from the hammer?
-
does it beep frequently
-
Quote myself:
Sometime it happens every couple of hours, sometimes couple per hour.
)
-
theres nothing u can do then i would not worry
-
I'm not sure if your's would be like my M60 or not, but I noticed when I was in the boot menu (press F2 in my case when starting computer up), that there was an option in there for enabling/disabling the system beep. Maybe yours is the same? I'm not sure, but it's worth a shot.

I have the same problem. Laptop beeps randomly. Even when i'm not even doing anything. I called cust. support and they referred me to a server location but I would like to find a simple solution without them having to keep it for a couple of days.
-
What programs are you running in the background when the beeping usually occurs?
-
Well I'm sure toshiba has plenty of things running in the background. But from what i can tell, I may have had these running:
Trillian
Toshiba Touch and Launch
Firewall and Anti-virus software from CA
Toshiba ConfigFree Software
Bluetooth Manager
Toshiba Virtual Sound
Synaptics Virtual Sound
Toshiba Power Manager
CD/DVD Drive Acoustic Silencer
I think I remember this starting after I installed this webcam software from Logitech. So I uninstalled that and I'll see if I heard the beep again. -
Ok, my laptop just beeped again. I was running those programs I listed before and Outlook Express and Firefox. Starting to get annoying.
-
Well as for sending in the unit for repair I have on 2 occasions and both time they said that they did not hear anything the unit was purchaced in april 2005 and been looked at to know avail
Toshiba M60
512 mb Ram
40 gb hd -
Hmm....
Do you have "Sticky-Keys" enabled? -
Yes but that sound is different.
-
Let's see - what about the mousepad? It might have something to do with Toshiba's mousepad software.
-
What do u want to know about the mouse pad? I rarely use it. I have a bluetooth mouse.
Also, I'm taking it to the shop tomorrow. -
Well, if you hold your finger in any one of the four corners of the mousepad, it launches the Toshiba toolbar (well, at least in the Qosmio it does - I'm not sure about the Satellite). A window should come up showing you your desktop. If you keep the window open too long or you keep your finger on the corner of the mousepad, it beeps.
-
Oh. No, I don't think that's it. Sometimes I'm not even at the laptop when it beeps. And I don't see any mouse action when it does.
-
-
Just took it to the shop today. We'll see what they can make of it. I have a feeling that I'll have to send it back to Toshiba anyway...for the second time. :-(
-
What was wrong with it last time?
-
Well before, they sent me the wrong laptop. Then after hours on the phone with them, i got them to pay for the shipping back to them and for them to make the laptop i ordered in the first place (without that 15% restock fee they were trying to charge me)
-
Well, let's keep our fingers crossed. Hopefully this "beeping" can be stopped by a visit to your local electronic repair store.
-
Fingers and toes.
-
And just got my laptop back. They of course didn't hear anything.
-
You could try taping your notebook when it makes the noise and take the tape in to the repair shop for them to evaluate it. Does the beeping impair the use of the notebook in any way (Other than it's really annoying)?
-
No, everything seems to work.
Maybe I will trying taping it. -
I'll let ya know. Mine just beeped for the first time since i got it back. It's racking my brain.
-
Anybody find anything out yet?

I9kfangui will work. It will tell you your CPU and GPU temps and fan speeds, just in case they don't turn on.
It is a nice program.

You might want to try Speedfan. You can get the information you need about the processor and motherboard by also downloading CPU-Z or Everest. See if that will do it.
-
For basic CPU temps. you might try MobileMeter - works great on my Satellite
-
Good luck latex001 with that Toshiba Tech support. I found their suppor HORRIBLE.
-
I would send mine back. But I purchased it online at the Toshiba site. And with the HORRIBLE experience I had ordering it and sending one back, I'm really don't want to do it again!
-
I'd still send it back if you're within the exchange date.
-
Definately send it back, it is probably a motherboard issue and it will probably become more and more frequent and loud. The only sound you should hear are the fans and the that shouldn't be very loud and maybe the click of the keys.

Not sure if any of the beeping laptops have the Intel 2200BG wireless adapter---but my Toshiba M-60 has had the same beeping problem. I talked with Toshiba and was about ready to take the laptop to a local authorized Toshiba repair facility for that problem.
I also had experienced a problem with the internet connection being somewhat quirky--losing the connection at times. I used the update feature in Windows XP and it could not find a better driver for the Intel integrated 2200BG adapter. But when I checked the Intel site, there was a driver and software update available.
Once I installed the update, voila. The internet connection is great and the beep has now gone away also—so far anyway..!!
Dumb luck....

My satellite m40 has the same problem, it beeps randomly and programmes keep poping out,, eventually crash....
I found out the probem occurs every time I resume my laptop from standby after a long time. It doesn't solve the problem re formating my m40 so I just disabled automatic standby and use hibernate instead.
This happens about 1 out of 5 times in standby. -
I just wanted to add another user to the pot having this problem. For me it on a sat. a105-s1013 and as the OP stated it seems we have the same problem. It's a system beep and not from the speakers. The beep comes from around the optical drive and is system beep for sure.
Right out of the box, there a random beeping for one to two seconds. This happens when the laptop is being used and not being used. There really is not connection to anything that we are doing. It happened with the original installed software.
I'll try to find if there are any driver updates that will fix this, but I suspect not.
I don't have the intel wireless adapter, so that's out.
Anyone point Toshiba's L2 or L3 tech support to this thread? -
I called Toshiba support last night with my issue and the resolution using the updated Intel driver and software as I already had a trouble report started on the beep on my M60.
I told the tech that I had solved the beeping issue and the quirky internet connection by downloading and installing the updated driver for the Intel 2200BG adapter.
The problem is that the typical way everybody looks for updates like this is to use the functionality of Windows XP device manager---which in my case did not work---it said that a better driver could not be found...
I really only found out about the driver update by googling problems for the 2200BG adapter separately and then from that--fishing through Intel's product support web site. Once I installed that update for the Intel adapter, I could tell within an hour that the beep problem was resolved because I was getting the random system beep multiple times an hour.
I suggested to the tech that Toshiba get the Intel updates on the Toshiba web site for their different laptop models if the Windows XP device manager isn't going to work to do the updates automatically...

Hi all,
I just recently bought a toshiba m100 and I also get the beeping problem. Sometimes it happens hourly, sometimes every few minutes. But, it doesn't really affect what I'm doing at the time.
I took it back to where i purchased it and they found no problems. Guess I'll call Toshiba tomorrow.

If you have the Intel wireless adapter, you may want to check Intel's website for an update for that---it solved my beeping problem...
-
yeh I tried doing what you did, but the weird thing is beeped after I formatted the computer and during the recovery using toshiba's software. I think I have a different problem, but it'd be great if it was the same as yours.
I live in Australia and Toshiba support seemed to be pretty helpful. guess I'll have to see how it goes
oh btw, i have the Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG adaptor

OK---good luck with your issue.
If you do end up looking at the software and drive update for the Intel Pro adapter, you might want to check Intel's site directly.
I know for me---using device manager to try an update of the driver didn't work----I got the message that a better match could not be found.
When I fished around Intel's website for my adapter---I did find a newer version driver and software for the adapter... -
Hi guys,
Just an update. Toshiba have heard the beep but can't figure out what's causing it. I haven't had a laptop for about a week now
They probably won't exchange it unless there is actually a fault on it. The tech i was talking to said that there seems to be no performance issues when it beeps.
Just duno what to do now
really hope i can get an exchange and start using this laptop. Only bought it about a month ago -
I guess they have possesion of your laptop then..?
Gees--if you have only had it a month---it is still covered under the original warranty.
I would push for a replacement if they can't get rid of the beep.
I doubt they can make an argument that the beep is supposed to be there...
