I have an A100-147 which is a very similar spec except that my Hard Disk is 60GB. It will be perfectly adequate for your needs and you should get a FREE upgrade to Vista Premium as ling as it is perchased betweem now and March 2007.

Sound quality and volume is fine though my model doesn't have the Harmon Kardon speakers which are even better.

That's not a bad deal. Is getting the cheapest possible notebook with a similar configuration your main concern? If so, there may be slightly less expensive options out there.

    Thank you Wheel_nut and chrisyano.

    chrisyano,
Actually, if I could get more for the same price, that would be better regardless of brand. How might the quality compare to this Toshiba though? I plan on having the notebook for 5 years at least.

I think you may be able to get a better configuration for about the same price or maybe a little more through Dell. The Inspiron e1505 using the coupons above in the Dell Coupons tab will help a lot.

Build quality is about the same between the two systems.

Here is my opinion about Toshiba build quality. It is quite good, but some Toshiba notebooks line(satellite/tecra) suffer from keyboard flex. For me it doesn't matter though, but your mileage might vary :)

Thanks chrisyano, unfortunately I can't take advantage of deals in the USA. I should've stated earlier that I'm in Canada.

Thanks skywalker. I think I'll get an external keyboard too whatever brand I buy, since I won't be moving around too much.

I bought this machine. A100-TA4C. Good product. How do I set monitor refresh rate above 60 MHZ? 60 is too low u know. If I attach another monitor, it's refresh rate i can set higher. But notebook monitor I can't go above 60 and it's hard on eyes.

    What is keyboard flex?

You cannot change the refresh rate on your notebook.
