Above is a review and according to this guy the GPU is underclocked by about 30%,ok i can accept the agp being 4x thats one thing, but underclocked by a third!!,why on earth would they want to do that?
I have actually ordered this laptop and i find this "secret" knowledge out now.
I know it has powermizer which is a nvidia technology to lower clock speeds and conserve energy when on the go,so is this guy wrong and just doesnt know how to push the machine to top speed or have toshiba PERMANENTLY lowered the GFX far below its full capacity.
Now dont get me wrong im still happy i ordered this machine vs some of the other cr*p out there, but the nvidia specifications for this chip played a reasonable part in my purchase decision,if they have done this i personally consider it gross misconduct on thier part as in the UK and most other places id say this would go against trade descriptions on several levels.
I mean you might argue the case, but IMO its a lot like selling a P4 2.5ghz when its actually 1.5ghz.

I recieved the computer now and im very happy with it,best one ive owned so far.
Its a m30 60gb hdd,1.6ghz centrino,512mb ddr with 64mb geforce 5200.
I decided to check out the clock speeds on the GFX`card and i can confirm they are indeed 1/3rd lower than they ought to be,both memory and gpu core.I imagine they may do this alot and it might not just be toshiba.
Now you can overclock using rivaturner, however after a little testing it soon revealed WHY its underclocked,at a certain point itll get unstable which is generally a heat issue, heat issues cause lockups and all sorts of problems.
Ive built several of my own computers and you only have to have bad heat sink contact with cpu die to get all sorts of problems.
So by desighn the machine cannot actually reach full speed, you can take the core clock from 200mhz to 250mhz and the memory from 400 to 500,i believe its safe and will improve performance although i dont recommend it as its clear it was done like that for a reason,it runs HOT.
My theory is the GFX card is near the touch pad,and theres no room for heat sinks and its closed in with not much air room.
That might explain why sony keeps sticking old low ram gfx cards in thier top notch gear, while the desighns are cool, the insides are not LOL,however sony aint as good, ive owned a few sony and they are cool but overpriced. -
NVidia gives companies a wide range of clock speed options. The engineers at Toshiba will determine the best speed based on the thermal properties of the design. So technically it is not underclocked, it is clocked right.
M30s are quite thin and light, they only have so much space and room for heat dissipation. The M30 is not a gaming laptop.
