We have two of these machines and they both showed this behavior within a couple of weeks of use. The screen just remains dark for several (e.g. 3) minutes, then it comes up with the login screen as per usual.
Anybody have any idea how to troubleshoot this?

I think hibernation is a terrible tool for laptops anyway, we debated this in depth on teh site a while back. Try just going to sleep, it will save you a lot of aggravation.

XP's Hibernation has been known to cause a lot of system problems like the one you mentioned. USB ports not being recognized, lan connections not reconnecting, no audio and there's more. I believe it's the OS interacting with the hardware on the system. Microsoft has released a lot of "fixes" for these types of problems, so you may want to either check MS's site or Toshiba's site for possible known issues/fixes. As Brian suggested, either let the system go to sleep or just turn the unit off.

I experienced the exactly same thing from my M35x. Running XP Pro.
I got this lappy last year but this problem start showing up lately....
Might be something from the last windows update?
Anyway, it doesn't happen everytime
M35X hangs upon returning from hibernation
