Hello, I recently purchased this Toshiba laptop. After updating windows I hooked it up with my Sony camcorder (DCR-TRV103 digital 8) through firewire. the laptop recognized it and asked me if I wanted to capture something. I chose that and Windows started Movie Maker (MM). MM showed correct counter and buttons like play, stop controlled the camcorder.

Then I found preview and capture did not function: When MM played the tape, the preview screen remained black though the counter was running accordingly. I pushed capture button and MM did not this time capturcapture a bit. Capture counter in terms of file size stayed at 0.0KB. When I pushed finish buton on MM, a small warning window came up and basically said there is some problem with the device.

To fix this I experimented with a number of settings: windows fully updated with latest chipset/graphics drivers, factory-condition windows with latest chipset/graphics, etc. I even borrowed for test a windows xp pro CD and tried it with no service pack, sp1a, and sp2 along with DirectX 9.0b and 9.0c. All thses settings failed to capture.

Any thoughts or similar problems from M35X-S111 users will be much appreciated :)

I'm sure you already looked at this

Do you have the correct input source selected?

Thanks for your input. I visited the movie maker page and found the instruction was what I had followed myself.

Before posting, I also tried Sony Vegas demo and it could not preview and capture either. I have been editing home videos with my camcorder and somewhat old Thinkpad T20 (W2K, P3-650) without any prolem.

BTW, a Toshiba rep told me that there's nothing they can do. Not very resourceful, I guess.
