I just reformatted this hardrive but I just realized that there are no drivers or utilities on the restore cd... stupid me should of checked first.
Toshiba hasn't updated there drivers support yet for this series; is there something I can do to get all the utilities and the proper drivers back.
Thanks in advance
-
Everything you had on the laptop when you bought is on rstore cd's. In my office the computer guy always tells us that the beauty of Toshiba laptops are restore cd's - you can always get everything back. Reinstall everything from restore cds and you should have "brand new laptop"
-
Well, I thought pretty stupid of Toshiba to only supply a "Restore disc", because I can't instlal Windows as I want to. However, if you have a copy of Windows at hand, the only more things you need are drivers and, as you say, they aren't on Toshiba's web site yet, how thoughtful of them heh.
Go on US Toshiba web site (www.toshiba.com) and go to the download drivers area and search for the Satellite M45 drivers, they are essentially the same, just make sure you download the ones adapted for the M40, like the NVidia drivers and not the Intel driver for the graphic card, the SoundMax driver for sound, etc. I managed to get all but one drivers and install successfully Windows from ground up with this method.
Good luck.

a restore disc will set your laptop exactly like the day you bought it - including all settings, data, and drivers.
and I received a Win XP cd along with my restore cd for the m40. the Win XP cd does say, "only for use with new toshiba computers".

I experienced exactly the same issues as you when I installed Windows XP with SP1. However, when I re-installed XP with the same Windows cD, but with SP2 slipstreamed in it, both problems disappeared. I don't know if installing SP2 on top of the other versions would have corrected the problem though.
And also, I noticed that, at first, when I had a clean XP instlal, the network devices didn't have a delay at boot, but once I ran the Home Networking Wizard (I didn't have to, but I still did it), I had this annoying one minute delay. And if you go check in the event logs, it's because of a stupid DHCP trying to find an IP problem. You can avoid this delay altogether by de-activating the unused LAN devices. I guess setting a static IP could also correct the problem.
Hope it helps.
-- EDIT --
Oh! And just so you know, from my multiple XP installs experience, I noticed this, which might be the reason why you're trying to install Pro instead of Home edition.
When you first install a Windows XP Home Edition and try to access files to and from a computer which has XP Pro Edition, you'll have tons of problems: a computer can access files but can't browse the computer or you can't see the computer or you can't even ping it. I had all these problems and more than once proceeded to install Pro version because I couldn't find a solution.
Well, the solution is pretty stupid, I REALLY don't know what this wizard does behind the scenes, but if you run the Home Networking Wizard and set your internet connection correctly and tell it which conections are used for your network, BAM, voilĂ , nothing will have changed (or so I think) in the configuration, but reboot and you won't have any more problemsIf done correctly of course. I have done it multiple times on a couple of configuration and it always comes down to this.
On a XP Pro computer, you don't need to run the wizard and everything works fine. On a XP Home, it's mandatory to make file sharing work. Unless someone tells me what Windows does in the background, I'm sticking to this

I managed to get everything setup now, and the laptop works in harmony with my 22" CRT
Got all my programs setup, and just ghosted the image today...
I think I will upgrade my RAM to 1G dual channel this summer because it is still a bit slower than my 2.53 P4 when multi-tasking.
Also, I noticed several utilities telling me that I only have 384MB of ram right now, does it mean the 128MB for the video card is actually system memory???
Thanks
Ming
PS...I'm thinking of hosting all the drivers I used for my installation. I think it will be a appreciated by forum members, but what do you think Toshiba will think of this? -
I'd be surprised if they cared
Drivers are drivers and they only work on the appropriate hardware. I can't say for sure, but it'd be funny if they actually had something to say!

Hello !
Heaveny38 your posts are great. Write more about everything you do)) I think you shoul apply fot tech support at Toshiba
)
What change have you noticed after installing windows your way? Do you have high pitch sound problem on your laptop? Is that pitching sound gone with manual install of XP? That sound bugs me and I wonder how to get rid off it. I wonder if this might be the software/drivers issue.
I watched DVD yesterday on battery. I was not able to finish watching one movie. I had the laptop setup to DVD playback. When I had Compaq Presario AMD64 3000 I could watch almost 2 movies. The M40 fan was most of the time on while watching the movie. Pretty comforting in the winter. Ok, to the point. Have you noticed longer battery life when installing windows your way?
When I am switching to higher resolution on my M40, the desktop "goes beyond the physical size of LCD screen. How to fix that? Thanks -
Bluemax43:
Well, when I have a particular computer, I get to know it the most I canAnd I like to share my experiences.
Installing Windows from ground up allowed me to install only what I need, because having lots of useless dump installed makes Windows run slower, as you already know. Microsoft OneNote, Office Trial, etc. all of these take space and even when uninstalled, leave some unwanted stuff.
The main reason why I wanted to install a clean Windows was that I had random crashes when leaving the computer lid-closed. Ever since I reinstalled, I never had a single crash anymore. I think it may be related to Toshiba Config Free ****ty program. I always feel better when I have installed everything myself!!!
However, I can tell you, no the noise doesn't go away, it's surely a hardware issue, I read somewhere that is has something to do with a piece of electronic which emits a noise related to the current going through it. Nothing much to do by ourselves about it. Guess it will come down to Toshiba to decide.
Battery life? Well, until I installed Toshiba Power Saver, I had no control on power properties whatsoever, so battery life was the worst possibleHowever, when installing the utility, it's back to the same results as when factory installed. No tangible gain here. I have to say, battery life on this notebook is pretty mediocre. Don't know what they did to it!!!
Try to watch underneath your laptop, you'll notice that even when there is some air blowing out of the left side, the fan is not always running. It actually alternates on and off, and I tell you, the day there is a laptop which actually makes that fan run at a lower speed for longer times, or at least, give the user the option, I'll be happy. Because on and off fan noise can be annoying at night!!!
About your screen resolution, set it to 1280x800, it's the native resolution for this laptop, you'll get the best results.

Thanks for the info. The more the better. What is really "native screen resolution" ? Why can't go higher? What can I do to bring my desktop to the size of my screen when I go for higher resolution than native - being 1280x800?
As for the annoying sound - I think I found half solution - connect external speakers and disable the built in speakers. Turn the volume all the way down and test for the high pitch sound. I think is gone. That in turn means that the culprit is set of built in speakers. Does this help in finding solution for getting rid off that annoying sound? -

it might work, but for example, Futureshop has the serial number marked on your invoice, so they check for a match when you return something.

Hey all. I noticed Toshiba now has an entry for the Toshiba M40 on their drivers download page. However, it seems almost every one of these entries is different from the ones I had found at first. The ones I found at first really seemed to be to correct ones, as most of the files started with "m40", as in Satellite M40. But now, they almost all start with different prefixes, really weird.
If someone tries them, I'd appreciate some feedback as on how smooth the setup goes, since I didn't have problems with the ones I found at first.
Thanks

1) I install the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility for Windows XP (v6.1.0.1008), dl from Tecra M3. The PCI ! is still there. Maybe that is one of the DVD CD-Rom driver, just no sure.
2) I went to the laptop2go.com, there is no driver there. It looks like a site just sell stuff. If you can, please give me more detail for the display driver installation. what is the full file name for that .inf?
thanks

By the way, the display driver I mentioned is dl from toshiba.com under model Tecra M3, and it is Windows XP Display Diver for nVidia GeForce Go 6200/6600 (v6.14.10.7114). I search in the nVidia website, there is no GeForce Go driver for download there. They have drivers for standard graphic card only.

The nVidia Driver 71.36 works fine. The next time is to find out the PCI device.

Personally, the thing that got rid of the ! PCI device is installing Windows XP Service Pack 2. My SP1 version had the ! mark, but not with SP2.
So either you live with it, or you can try installing SP2, if you don't have it already, of courseIn that case, I'm clueless.

The PCI ! is the SD Secure Controller driver which you can dl in Tecra M3. Now all the ! are gone. I am will dl the sp2 and do upgrading later today.

Ok, you must be right, so it only means that SP2 has this driver integrated

The toshiba.ca website also has the drivers for M40 now. Here is the link:
http://209.167.114.38/support/Download/files_downloads/index/Satellite/sm40en.htm
I think these drivers are even more update version.
A good way to install a new set of Windows XP for any reason (home > professional, or take away those pre-install garbages):
1. take a digital photo on your original setting under the hardware profile, add/remove software in control panel, system tray
2. use the photo to compare the new system and original one, and see if you miss something, especially those critical drivers.
3. some toshiba utility are useful, but some you never use. I think ConfigFree and power saver are very useful. -

I've upgraded to XP pro and installed the SP2. I had a missing dll that was causing a problem. I was finally able to get rid of the error message by uninstalling the Toshiba power management software. Has anyone else had this issue? Any fixes yet?
