    Hi,

I purchased the Toshiba Satellite M40-JM3. I'm quite pleased with it so far, but I am having a few video related problems.

The notebook comes equipped with a few programs for playing DVD's:

    Windows Media Player 10
    InterActual Player
    InterVideo WinDVD

I'm finding that the only player that works is InterVideo WinDVD. Incidentally, the DVD decoder seems to be supplied by InterVideo.

When I try WMP10 or the InterActual Player, I get sound but no video.

I also notice that when I used WMP to try and play movie trailers, etc. online, I either get a black screen or a video that plays but the controls are screwed up (I see part of the progress bar, but no other controls).

I saw similar problems with the units on display where I bought this notebook, so my feeling is that Toshiba may not have installed everything correctly.

Has anyone else had similar problems and resolved them?

    Thanks for your help.

    Steve

Sounds like a codec problem. Go here and download some codecs:

Thanks for the suggestion. I have the matroska pack installed, but this didn't seem to have any effect on it. I believe the problem is probably pervasive to a number of Toshiba laptops because when I was at the store, the demo models exhibited the same kind of problem.

    Cheers

I had a similar problem with my HP NX7000 that I returned a while back. I believe it's WinDVD causing the problem. My old notebook came with WinDVD as well. I reloaded the OS from scratch and WinDVD was the DVD program I installed (came with the system). Same problem, no video or video but no audio. After removing it off the system and installing PowerDVD, worked fine. It's also possible the InterVideo codecs are getting mixed up with the Matroska pack to cause more problems. Uninstall the Matroska pack & WinDVD and install PowerDVD and see if it works for you.

    Sky,
The DivX codec will not help when playing DVD movies, only movies compressed with the DivX codec (usually AVI files).

Thanks for the response. The Matroska pack is something I installed after the problem first started occurring - it was part of the set of solutions I tried.

I think you may be on to something though with respect to WinDVD and potential conflicts with Windows Media Player. Kind of odd though that they would install this when a problem exists. But having worked in the software industry for a number of years now - you can't test everything!
