I read that my machine, the Toshiba Satellite XS05-S7483 can support a maximum of 4 GB RAM. I bought a stick of 2 GB, which would give me the total 4 GB after installation. I would still have a slot free. What would happen if I bought another RAM stick and put it in? Would the machine refuse to boot?

Your machine, the Toshiba Satellite (*^^% has 2 slots for RAM. If you bought a stick of 2 GB, which would give you the total 3 GB after installation, would not have a slot free.

Nope, unless you did something wrong like put the module in.. incorrectly.
Edit: Did you buy a 2GB afterwords or did it say 2GB of RAM when you selected your notebook? -
wait how many slots for ram do u have and i believe that even if u put in mre ram, 1) ur comp would not be faster 32 bit OS can only see up 3.5 GB ,2) i think ur mobo only takes up to 4 gb.

Slot 1: 1GB
Slot 2: 1GB
or
Slot 1: 2GB
Slot 2: Empty.
So, if it is the first case, then you would need to remove a 1GB card to install the 2GB card leaving you with 3GB and zero available slots. If it is the second case you would have 4GB with zero available slots.
So in either case you won't have an opportunity to install more than 4GB. However, hypothetically, the computer would either not boot or not register any more than 4GB as installed.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
I haven't opened it up. Doesn't the base RAM come built right into the laptop?

built in as in sodered in?
You can pull the RAM out usually. -
But the quote that I posted is straight from your laptops spec sheet:
So yours likely does not. Which again means it is either:
Slot 1: 1GB
Slot 2: 1GB
or
Slot 1: 2GB
Slot 2: Empty.
The only way to know for sure is to open it up. -
It has 2 x 1GB sticks... All x205 are configured that way... So you will have to put out 1 x 1GB Stick and use your brand new 2 GB, reaching 3 GB... Or you can buy 2 x 2GB so you can have 4GB
Maxing out RAM
