A lot of users (I think quite a few with the SP A100) find these drives to be very unreliable. Try searching the Toshiba forum for threads about these drives as I think there are a couple of things you can do, like maybe update firmware or even replace the drive.

Matshita is not good drive. It 's very unreliable especially while burning non brand(blank) DVDR either +/-. TSST is better but for me NEC DVD drive is one of the best drives out there.

I may give away that Mashita and buy another burner to upgrade. My Sony Fe has Mashita drive in there.... I haven' t test it yet. I just burned a couple of some Ridata Cds for music.

You can google exact your Mashita model name to get the firmware for it.

I think Ridata Cds works great as long as you burn under 10X. I don't know about their DVDs though.

Using high quality media will help some, but I would agree they are not the best drives.
