I just found out the laptop I got 18 months ago needs a new motherboard. It would cost almost as much to repair as a new laptop. How do I know I won't get stuck the next time around, aside from getting an extended warranty? I've heard that some notebooks can run pretty hot. Doesn't that reduce the life of the notebook?

you can also buy a cooling pad (check for recommended types in Accessories forum) especially if you're a serious gamer! :)

As with all electronics, several researches indicates that it does affect their lifetime.(at the transistor level)

unless you are playing games with your laptop on the surface of the sun it should be able to last a lot longer than 18months... ;)
