I own a Satellite M115-S3094 and find it kind of annoying how loud the fan is and how often it goes off. I'd like to take control of it and lower the fan speed with a program like Speedfan, but I'm not sure what's safe and not safe. Any advice?

I would first check and make sure that you do not have any excess dust or junk stuck in your air intake on your notebook. If there is any, blow it out with some compressed air. Speedfan will work on your notebook however, anti-virus programs such as Norton may interfere with it.

Notebook is only about a week old and it's been doing it since the beginning. :(

Am having a similar problem with a HPdv4270ca less than a year old, no dust, no spyware, no virus. Seems to happen mostly when USB antenna for cordless mouse is installed. Have updated BIOS and Mouse drivers. Cannot find ACPI or USB driver updates. Have reinstalled power management and USB host controllers. Speedfan reports only HDD temp on laptop but no correlation between temp and fan speed. laptop is not physically hot.

bchreng....My experience with speedfan (2 years on desktop) is that you can change fan speeds but if temp goes up you must adjust manually....so not safe. Try some of the above first and good luck.

Just now tried plugging in USB antenna while on dc and fan didn't come on so may be a power management issue. Any thoughts would be appreciated as not many options in power management.

gah! I just now noticed that when the system goes into hibernation and wakes back up, the fan is permanently stuck in high speed mode until it's restarted! I think it's an issue in the BIOS that Toshiba needs to fix asap.
