I am in need of a new laptop for my HP is totally unreliable. I would like to have a PM processor and the lighter the better! I would also like to stay with a fairly large brand save for HP/Compaq, and I can probably get a better deal if I get a computer in town so this may negate going with dell.

I am looking at the Tecra S1 for $2399 Cdn: http://www.toshiba.ca/web/specifications.grp?lg=en&section=1&group=1&product=1451&part=1470

The only hesitations I have is that it is a little bulky and I am hesitant about the weight. I do like the fact that for $2399 I get a three year warranty, although this is pretty close to being at the peak of my price range.

I do also like the Fujitsu's with the Pentium M (S6020), for the size and weight is pretty nice.

The other laptop I recently saw that peaked my interest was the Dell 600M. It seems that I can get one with a 1.4Ghz PM, 256mb ram, 30Gig HD, 3 year warranty (with complete care), DVD+RW, and a 64mb Radeon graphics controller for about $2400.

There's also the Gateway 200X, I'm slightly leary about it though for Gateway seems to have pulled out of Canada for the most part, and the battery life seems low for a Pentium M.

Any other suggestions would be grand, something in between the Fuji and the Toshiba would be nice. If anyone has any experience with the Tecra S1, or any other of these laptops please let me know as well.

    Thanks,

    Matt

    Hey Matt,

I like the Dell 600M too, and it's quite a bit lighter than the Toshiba Tecra S1 (600M is 5.5 lb the Tecra S1 is 6.2 lb). In this months Consumer Reports magazine the Dell 600M received the following rating:

    Convenience: Very good
    Speed: Very good
    Multimedia: Very good
    Display: Very good
    Expansion: Very good
    Warranty: Very good
Energy: Good (battery gave 3 3/4 hr life which is only okay)

You get an SXGA 14" monitor with the 600M and it comes with the Intel Centrino processor...if you wait for a good deal from Dell (such as coupon codes often available) you can score big on price.
