I have a Qosmio G45-AV680. Overall it is a great laptop, but getting a bit old. I wanted to speed it up a bit so I deceded to upgrade the processor.
Let me start off with the specs. My G45 is equiped with a PM965 chipset and a T7300 Core 2 CPU. I am running the current BIOS (version 2.2) which indicates in the instalation notes that this includes penryn and OCUR (cablecard) support.
The notebook was revised a year later (2008) with a Penryn T9300. The laptop still used the PM965 chipset, in fact all the specs are exactly the same excapt for the CPU and the external TV tuner. The AV680 featured a basic external tuner while the AV690 included an ATI Cablecard tuner. Both computers use the same BIOS.
I am unsure if both laptops feature the same exact motherboard. I do know that the 965 chipset is suposed to run Penryn chips running on the 800 MHz bus speed. So far I have tried two T9300 chips (the same type used in the AV690) with no luck.
The power turns on, but there is no boot to BIOS. The fans do not turn on, the CD drive does not spin and the screen does not turn on. The only thing I can think of is that the CPU is locked to the motherboard.
So a few questions really...
1. Does anyone know if there are any differences between the motherboards on the AV680 and AV690?
2. I know HP locks some hardware compnents. Has Toshiba done this as well? Does OCUR compliance require certain components to be locked?
3. Has anyone else run into issues upgrading a T7XX seties to e T9XX series on a 965 chipset?
