    Hi all,

    I have a 4-5 year old Toshiba m40-yp3.

Yesterday the comp froze on me with a checkerboard pattern (pink and green).

I tried booting and just a white flash with nothing happening...

Turns out it was booting - just not to laptop screen.

Hooked up to external monitor and is booting, but with MAJOR patterns all over the screen with barely visible boot screen behind.

When I move the mouse, all kinds of flickering and patterning, mostly grey, red and green. When I move anything the pattern turns mostly green. It is almost like PLAID all over the screen.

Nonetheless, I am thinking the GPU is fried.

The graphics card is a 128MB GeForce GO 6600 by Nvidia.

    What should I do?

Should I try replacing the graphics card if I can even find one?

    Could something else be wrong?

Anyone familiar with the inside of this machine? Is it easy to replace the GPU?

Someone recommended "baking" the card - would that be worth a shot?

    Any help is appreciated!

You could give baking a try if you are out of warranty.

    Kind of a guide here.

I am just not sure if the GPU is soldered on to the Motherboard...

Is there any point of opening it up?

Yes - way out of warranty...4 years 11 months (3 year warranty).

    Is it 99% the GPU?

Is there anything else it could be?

    Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it's the GPU. You could try reseating the LCD cable to check, but these are prime examples of a dead GPU. If the baking doesn't work, just buy a new notebook. That one is fairly old at this point, so it may be a better option to buy a new one rather than buying costly parts to repair it.

And if you don't open it up, you are not going to be able to bake it, are you?
