Ok, so here's the story: 2 guys tried to mug me and steal me laptop, but I ran after them and fought them, but because of the fight, they dropped my laptop on the road a couple of times. As a result, the CD drive is completely ruined, and the LCD broken (the hard drive was damaged too, but I had a replacement). I got a monitor and hooked it up using VGA out, and just yesterday, bought an external DVD drive, hoping that I would be able to run my Vista recovery software. Unfortunately, the software is programmed such that it only looks for the Recovery disc in the native DVD drive. So I tried setting up Vista using my friend's Vista disk, but that wouldn't let me install using my OEM Vista CD Key. I have an Original copy of XP, so I really need help getting the drivers for it. :(

Again, my laptop is a Toshiba Satellite U405-S2856.

    Thanks.

Use they key your friends disc came with. Vista's activation program allows you to change the key, which you could change to your key, provided it's the same version. It should activate. Worst case is you'll have to call Microsoft to get it activated. Sorry to hear about the notebook.

    1. I can't activate online since I can't change the product key to my own using the "change product key" button.
    2. Even if I try to activate by phone, there's no way to change the prodcut key to my own. :(

It's listed in Device Manager as "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus".

The Toshiba site has - Conexant Audio Driver for Windows Vista - which installed fine on XP, but I still got no sound.

Did you try the Vista driver? Sometimes they work.

See post 6. I installed the Connexant driver, and it installed fine, but no sound. :(
