Currently own a 16 inch Toshiba and thinking about stepping up to a larger one and torn between a high end Qosmio and a high end ASUA gaming. Help me make a decision.
-
I would say both have about the same specs (maybe ASUS has more; assuming ASUS G73).
Qosmio is bigger and heavier, more of a desktop replacement (imo).
Higher end Qosmio models have 1080p screen, I think G73 only has 720p. Audio speakers on Qosmio are amazing for a laptop, ASUS is average.
Qosmio has more battery life (12V) compared to ASUS (8V).
I like the keyboard keys of the Qosmio better than the "island" type of the ASUS.
I think ASUS has USB 3.0 (please verify), Qosmio only has USB 2.0
Higher end Qosmios have Bluray/Bluetooth
ASUS has 2 yr warranty, 1 yr Accidental Repair; Qosmio only has 1 yr warranty.
And the list goes on and on (if others want to add please do). I was in the same boat as you a few weeks ago. I picked the Qosmio and am very happy.
Let us know what you decide. -
Qosmios are overpriced and terrible... Pick up an Asus for sure.
-
I guess pick your poison. The lowest end model is the best bang for yoru buck (more than ASUS). i5, with GTX 460
However, for full disclosure, I have prior experience with ASUS desktop parts. Never will go that avenue again. -

Can you guys elaborate? If I'm missing something, I would like to know.
I still have 70 days to take back my Qosmio. If they are that "terrible" I would like to know why. -
Toshiba has 0 support. No good driver update, last BIOS update on our x300 was about one year ago and added nothing. Locked out BIOS, no GPU voltage changing for example. My X300 was hard to clean etc. as I had to take my whole laptop apart. I've called Toshiba cause I needed a keyboard replacement, they had no idea if the keyboard I was looked for ever was made or not (!) however, the guy over phone noted down my phone number and email adres and said he was going to check it out and return back to me, ugh guess what? Almost 2 months and this guy has still not returned to me... I was forwareded 3 times on phone before I reached a costumer which could help me, he never returned to me however. They do not want to give the datasheet of x300 to us, however we finally figured out the PLL but did not help at all. About 1 year back a 'official' BIOS update created a random BIOS password, I were not able to acess my BIOS, they did fix it tou, few months later.
I'll never buy a Toshiba product again. That's it, my first and last.
I stopped using my X300 about 1 month back, I can't even sell it, here in Norway. However, I got the rare version with 9800M GTX, so I'm going to sell my GPU and sell the other parts if anyone need. I'm way more happy with my new laptop. -
Bad customer support. I agree with you there. Faulty drivers, looks like your right.
Was hardware ok? You said you had to get a replacement keyboard?
If I was to return my Qosmio, I would not get the ASUS (same reasons as you have stated for the Qosmio; PLUS hardware actually gave out; something Qosmio didn't do?).
Thank you for your help. That is the type of input I am looking for. Keywords like "expensive" and "terrible" aren't informative. -
One day my keybord stopped working. First 'a' then 'ctrl' the the whole thing just went crazy. I also do not like how they 'undervolt' their GPU's etc. This gives very little rom for overclocking. And with locked out BIOS, you can't do anything with it... Qosmios are also expensive comapred to other brands with same specs. that's just a general fact.

Here another disappointed user of Toshiba..
Never im going to buy another from that brand, i had 2 previous Satellites and 1 Tecra and my experience with them were good, but like i needed a laptop fast (my old Studio XPS 16 was stolen) for school i went with the Toshiba..
Like tunay, horrible support (5 mobos replaces and 1 the both 9800M) which took like 6 months in repair (1 month for each part to arrive) also they made some scratchs on my cover and they left me without the headphones port and volume scroll bar (i had to repair the laptop myself).
Stay away from Toshiba is my only advice -
He asked for Qosmio not other models.
If you go to Asus or other brand threads you would find the same comments as in here about service
I can only speak for the X500, and have to say i am very imressed....so far.

"Qosmios are also expensive comapred to other brands with same specs. that's just a general fact".
Are you aware of the prices for MSI GT663 in Norway?. We talk about a "15" with the same price as the most expencive Qosmio X500 model -
Toshiba has terrible, and I mean TERRIBLE customer support. I get this from personal experiences, and from reading on the Toshiba forums. The qosmio is all plastic, and the build quality isn't that swell. The Asus G series is built well (g73/g53 are above average from the rest of the G's). Plus they look better! -
As far as CS, I'm ok on it because I have Costco Concierge Service for 2 years (they have my back if anything goes wrong; if Toshiba makes a defective product and refuses to fix Costco will give me a new laptop even if a few years down the road from now).
As I have mentioned in some previous posts, I have an 8 yr old Toshiba Satellite that still runs great (but outdated).
I haven't seen too many negatives concerning hardware (at least not more than ASUS; though ASUS sells more G73s than Qosmios, maybe Toshiba has more overall sales?).
I think the exterior build is a preference. I like the Qosmio build quality and think it is on par of the G73 if not surpasses it (I have seen the G73 in person). I actually thought the G73 plastic looked cheaper (looked like lawn drainage plastic. NDS 6 in. Structural Foam Polyolefin Grate - 50 at The Home Depot ).
I think the Qosmio chassis is in line with mainstream electronics. But like I said, it's all preference.
