I've had my A75-S229 for about 6 years now and it's been a pretty good computer. Over time, the OS has gotten enough errors that it won't boot anymore. No big deal, I'd like a new PC anyway. I've taken out the original Hard Drive and put it into a caddy and now I can pull off the documents, photos and data files.
Question:
The rest of the computer was working just fine (display, keyboard, DVD writer, etc.). The authorized Toshiba service center that has always been a big help when I've had minor service issues says, it can install a new hard drive and give me all of the original apps and drivers -- essentially giving me the PC in it's out of the box state. $225 for a 120Gig (or whatever the original size is) drive.
I can buy a "Wstrn Dig-OEM Scorpio Blue WD1200BEVE 120GB 5,400RPM IDE ATA/100" from MicroCenter for 70 bucks. I have a disk in a sealed case from my original Toshiba box that says
"TOSHIBA "Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD"
Satellite A70/A75 Series
Can I do myself for 70 bucks, what the service center will do for $225?
Just plug in the new disk, put the DVD in the drive, power up the machine according to the instructions on the recovery disk case and I'm done?
Will this hard Disk be compatible with my A75? Theis recovery disk has the Windows OS on it, right? I don't care about lost apps. This machine will probably run Google Calendar and OpenOffice and be the secondary laptop for web surfing and homework.
Thanks a lot in advance

If that is the recovery disk set that came with the laptop it should be able to completely restore the system to it's factory out of box state. Jut boot to that disk and follow the prompts.
