This is my first non-Dell purchase. I would never buy an extended warranty for my Dell laptops because all the parts that might have needed to be replaced are readily available on Ebay. However, this does not seem to be the case with Toshiba laptops. They need to be pretty old before they get parted out. What are thoughts on purchasing an extended warranty? Thanks.
By the way, I don't hear any high pitched noise. However, the laptop is not silent, very quiet. I did have it lock up once when plugged in the adapter while it was online. It did not happen again. Gorgeous display and sleek styling. Very loud dvd player (defective???), you have to turn the volume on a dvd quite high to drown it out. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.

Hi anna123, I also am interested in the practicality of the extended warranty from toshiba.
Regarding the noise of the dvd drive, mine is the same however I noticed a cool feature on my model (the M40) that might be the same on yours. One of the system tray icons has an option for switching the dvd drive to quiet mode. I'm guessing it just spins slower but it really does make it a lot quieter. Hope that works for you. -
Thanks Reedikulous and anna123. While I had used the dvd to load software, I had not used it to play music etc. Well, as soon as I saw these two posts, I loaded a Karrin Allyson cd in and the dvd player noise was definitely unacceptable. I found the cd/dvd drive acoustic silencer and set it to quiet mode. It sure is quiet now. I also adjusted the Toshiba Virtual Sound and there was some improvement.
Since I am in the room with my desktop, I put the cd in my naim audio player (moved from my audio system [replaced with a ModWright Sony 999ES] and connected to my desktop computer speaker -- Altec Lansing FX6021 2.1 speakers -- what a sound, what a difference. The m45 is not too bad but you realize that there is really no bass. I highly recommend the FX6021. It sounds great with a desktop and you could hook an inexpensive sony or other cd player and have a shockingly good sound system in your computer room -- very smooth, extended and without the standard brightness and hardness you generally find in computer speaker systems, regardless of price.
As for the extended warranty, I cannot comment on the practicality etc. I used to be more open to extended warranties. Now, I tend not to purchase them. However, I decided since this is a laptop and will be moved around on occasion, I could not pass up the Toshiba offer to extend the warranty from one year to three years and which offer included the System Guard (breakage etc) coverage for $199. I noticed that the offer ($100 off the $299 price) is still being made. If you consider this the right option for you, remember that you must purchase it within 30 days of purchase of your laptop.
If this were a desktop purchase instead of a laptop purchase, I probably would not have spent the money on the warranty. In the past, if I have had a computer/part problem, it has shown up the in the first year, if not the first couple of months. As to Dell -- which my desktop is -- they have repeatedly told me that if you add any hardware that is not purchased from them that it voids the warranty. I get the same story in the office. I have seen various postings where Dell customers have removed hardware or video cards etc. which they installed in order to get Dell to honor their warranty. While there may be compelling business reasons for this policy, it appears to be absurd when the problem you may be having (for instance some software problem in Windows XP or some difficulty in the hardware which you purchased from Dell) is with the part etc you got from Dell. For all I know, this may be Toshiba's policy too.
Other than the hard drive (which I decided not to replace), I don't see many options for upgrading etc. (except for more ram and a higher capacity battery). That said, the UPS guy just showed up with the extra 512mb of ram which I ordered from Toshiba. I will stick it in now and see if I notice any difference.
Good luck. I appreciate both of your insights. ROG
