It's not on Toshiba's website yet, but I caught this being listed on Newegg:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114635

Appears to be a stripped-down version of the Q708, but I do like the single 9800M GTX - should give 3DMark scores similar to the SLI Q706. Maybe an SLI GTX version is coming as well???

Toshiba really needs to lower the $4200 price of the Q708 - Newegg has it on sale now for $3800. When it gets to $3300 I'll consider hitting the buy button.

Toshiba has the X305 successor coming in April 09, so if you haven't committed to buying one yet, you might want to wait. I'm hoping the mobile Core i7 will be shipping by then.

No idea what they're coming out with at the moment. Toshiba confirmed this to me very early in November - they definitely have a new model arriving in April. I'm guessing it will be called the X405, and since Intel is scheduled to release the mobile Core i7 at around that very same time, I'm guessing it may also have that mobile Core i7 CPU.

My real hope is that they come down in price. The Q708 is simply overinflated, and doesn't even match a $4000 Sager for hardware, despite being an amazing notebook. If you haven't read my review yet, check it out at my blog.

Where did you get info that Intel will be releasing mobile Core i7 processors in April? This is the first I've heard of this. I had always assumed we would have to wait until the fall.

the 305 models are for US only while 300 for the rest of the world (at least EU and Canada as far as I know)

300 has less spec but with some featurs like finger print scanner and remote control

Intel is scheduled to release the mobile Core i7 in Q209, assuming there are no delays to their timetable, but I wouldn't complain too much if it only comes out in the early second half of 09. If I remember right, Intel has stuck to a six month delay between releasing new architecture for desktops versus mobile processors.

I was making a purely "educated guess" based on the architecture of the two GPU's (texture units, shader processors, fill rate, etc..). You may be right, but from the specs alone I see both machines performing fairly close in the gaming benchmarks, although one WILL be slightly faster. I would choose the quad-core SSD machine any day though, simply because it will run my video encoding apps much faster, multitask better, and boot vista in a snap alongside offering great gaming. I am somewhat partial to the 708, simple because I had the chance to use one back in November and see what it was capable of.

thats still a hell of a deal though i mean SSD drive, Quadcore, AND 9800GTX for $2600? You cant find a deal like that nowhere.
