I need to keep this thing running for an on-line test - all suggestions are welcomed, Thanks.

    Mine's a A55-S3061, Centrino 1.5 256 40 Intel 32 mb shared video.
XP Pro SP1 with all non-SP 2 updates, Nortons AV, Ad-aware. Was using CA's firewall (Zone Alarm Pro), then switched to XP firewall to attempt diagnosis. No noticiable change. Not interested in SP 2

S l o w, web pages take 30 seconds to load on LAN or Wireless, numerous error / debug messages, outlook office undelivered messages, All programs are slow including boot and shut down. modem dials but wontload from server, start items load intermittantly.

Is there a command i need to give it? Have I missed something?

The unit is days old. Ive scanned disk, defraged, ran Nortons.
No strange software installed or bad sites visited. Battery and video are good.

Reload the OS from scratch, not from the recovery CD's. This will eliminate all the s/w installed by Toshiba. These usually cause the system to load slowly. Don't bother with all that s/w you installed (AV, Ad-aware, firewalls), just make sure the system runs fine before installing. This way, you'd be able to narrow down the issue. If the problem still happens after doing a reload from scratch, it could be a hardware problem. Maybe the RAM is bad or even the systemboard. My cousin got a unit and it was problematic from day one (similar to your issues), replacements to the HDD and systemboard did nothing. I then noticed an error message and told him to get the ram replaced, well what do you know, it was the ram the caused all the problems.

I think your problem is the lack of RAM and shared Video RAM. Also Norton products are nortorious for being RAM hogs.
