I have owned a Toshiba 1800 Series for a few years and until recently, I have had no problems. Recently, I have had to reformat a few times as it is just giving out. I am located in Montreal and I am looking at a Toshiba Satellite A100-TA4. Price is quite respectable so I am hoping to get some pro's and con's from others here. Dealer says it is Vista ready and I just load it when it is out. Will this be a problem and will I need to reload all my software. All comments are appreciated especially with respect to the unit itself.

    Thank you.

It's not very difficult to load an OS--as you are likely aware of having reformatted a few times already. You will need to reload all of your other software and data when doing so.

OK. Then am I correct to assume that any system that you get with XP, which is Vista ready, you will have to redo and reload everything when you infact load switch to Vista?

Yes. You will have to go through everything you go through when you reformatted XP in the past.

So, in my very newbie opinion, all these companies who are selling laptops with XP but Vista ready - this will be much work to actually switch from XP to Vista once it is out. Probably better off waiting until laptops with Vista already on them come out

I actually like the current Express Upgrade Program. It gives you a copy of XP to work with until Vista has matured a bit and developed more driver support. I would take advantage of it so that I would have XP on my notebook until Vista's SP1 is released. Then I would unwrap my free copy of Vista to try out. And if you don't like Vista for some reason, you can always go back to XP for free. Two OS's for the price of one--I think it's worth a reformat or two.
