Can anybody explain why they don't include a $10 integrated fax-modem on their Qosmio models? What kind of thinking leads to such a decision?

Not many people need dialup access anymore? :)
Also it still takes board space.

What is the problem, just buy same $10 USB->phone socket cable with tiny modem inside it - problem solved.

Yeah, the Qosimo is a consumer (vs business) oriented laptop and the vast majority of people with the disposable income to purchase a ~$1500 laptop are no longer using a dial up modem for anything. If anything removing it prevents calls from people trying to figure out why their ethernet doesn't seem to fit. I second the USB option, if you travel with your laptop (and why you would with a qosimo is beyond me) what you could do is just leave the USB modem permanently plugged into the line at your home so all you have to do is just plug in the USB end to your laptop.

    Ingvarr,

    1. What most people do when they type a letter and need to fax it? Do they print and run it through their printer/scanner/fax "all in one" device? This is very labor consumming and not efficient. I don't know anybody that doesn't need to send faxes every once in a while.

    2. How did you customize your Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q830? Is there any outfit that sells customized Qosmio's? I need a high performance / entertainment system (not for gaming, but for home-business).

    3. Can you add an SSD to the Q830?

    Thanks, A.

    1. Most people don't type a letter and fax it. Most people type an email and email it.

Have you ever tried sending an email to your bank, mortgage company, utilities company, telephone company, government, state, city, credit card dispute... (should I go on?)... AND GET RSULTS? If you did then you are not living in the US and I would like you to sponsor me as an immigrant to your country. lol

I live and UK and never had need to fax anything. Subjects either need documents by post or don't require them at all (online process). Anyways I guess since modems now shrunk to size of the USB cable and not everybody needs them, it's pretty pointless to put them in every laptop.

I have put WD Scorpio Black hard drive in my Q830. For now I am pretty satisfied with it, possibly will replace a screen but only if I will find 18.4 screen with both non-high DPI and good quality (very tricky task).
Q830 lacks second hard drive bay connection, so you won't be able to add SSD. Maybe it has mini-PCIe slot under keyboard like X205 did, I haven't checked yet - in this case adding mini-PCIe SSD would be possible.

I'd like to know what country YOU live in. If it's anything civilized, like the US, Canada, Japan, UK, Europe, or mainland Australia, (leave out Tasmania, it's NOT civilized down here) then obviously you would have no need for fax. I don't know anyone who uses fax to send documents.

I'm sorry, but personally, I think you need to take a good look at "getting with the times".
