Same story as so many others:

I connected an HDMI cable from my laptop to TV and am able to get beautiful picture, but no sound. My OS is Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3. I’ve already tried going to Control Panel > Sound and Audio > Audio > Sound Playback ATI HD Audio rear output + speakers set to 5.1 surround sound speakers + re-start computer. No dice.

    The details:
Laptop: Toshiba Satellite M300 (has HDMI port)
    TV: Sharp LC-32SB24U

I’ve Googled until I’m blue in the face and can’t even diagnose the problem. Is it my sound card? My video driver? DO I need to upgrade something, disable something, buy something? Instruction manual for the TV doesn’t require a separate audio cable for HDMI (which should be the case anyway) and laptop instructions don’t say anything about outputting audio, just video.

    Please help!

I think you should upgrade your video drivers. It's working fine with me...

Here is a guide on how to update your drivers.

It works for me in Windows 7, but not Vista, and I'm running different driver versions.

    Thanks for your response.

Are you sure that upgrading my video drivers will fix this? How does that work? Have you ever tried streaming via HDMI on Windows XP (since you mention Windows 7 and Vista, but not XP)?

I looked at the thread and wasn't sure if my video driver fits. I appear to have ATI Catalyst Control or something. Not sure if there's a difference between that and the other ATIs listed in the thread.

You will need to find the model of the laptop's GPU. This can be done by pressing the "Windows" key, and R at the same time. Type "dxdiag" in the dialog box - without the quotes.

I haven't tried XP myself but it should work if you have the right drivers installed.
