Hi, I thought I posted this already but cannot find it? Anyway, just in case, a friend was using her laptop and it was working perfectly, all of a sudden she got a message 'AVG has detected excessive memory usage and advise closing explorer and reopening' or at least something like that.
She was about to shut down and reboot the machine when the screen went black. Since that day the the machine will not start up, the procedure is:
Press the power button, the fan starts and runs for a few seconds and that is that, there is no life on the screen whatsoever. I have tried removing the battery and booting with just mains, and then with just battery, and then with mains and battery no difference. No POST or BIOS nothing so I cannot do anything, no flicker from the HD light either.
I have also removed and reseated memory modules and also the hard drive so does this sound like a mother board failure? If so what would the cost be to replace?
Thanks in advance

can you hook it up to an external monitor just to see if it will display anything on there?
have you tried booting up the pc with no HDD in at all? remove the drive then power up the laptop and see.
if not and it doesnt sound good that theres no HDD light, then probs fried board.
