hey all I have been llooking around on the net to find a notebook cooler for my toshiba laptop but most of the reviews are done using other brands of laptops (even macs - which have no fan) and from what they are saying, their test systems dont sound anything like how my laptop is designed in terms of air flow (cpu fan, the vent on the side etc)... so assuming many of the toshiba designs are similar, i figure i would ask here as to what other toshiba users use to cool their systems.

    so, what does everyone use?

my current setup is a rolodex stand that has adjustable heights with a metal surface with LOTS of little holes in the surface.
I have a large table fan behind the stand, which kinda helps but is noisier than my 360 on its fastest setting, though not nearly as loud as that targus chill mat i tried out at Christmas and took back to Staples.

Can you possibly post a picture of the bottom of your notebook? Thanks.

Identical placement to my HP?! The notepal Infinite shoudl work well for you then, as the air output is pretty good around that area which means it should feed cool air directly for your fans. Any other vets? Click on my sig pic, you will find my review there. But the review was done with my older notebook.

sounds like a good cooler but can't find a retailer that has it for a reasonable price (expansys.ca has it for $35 CAD but the shipping is almost that much! which means despite being a canadian site it's a US based shipper - which doesn't help much - no external cooler is worth $70 or higher!)

I have an old Satellite M45 (3 yrs old) that developed an overheating issue shortly after the one-year warranty expired. The hard drive failed when it was about 16 months old and the guy at the computer shop blamed heat buildup as the cause.

I replaced the hard drive and it worked fine. I used it for a few months before giving it to my sister. The first thing I did when I got it working again was buy a notebook cooler. I bought one made by Antec with dual fans. It's retail price is $39.99 but I got it for $19.99 on sale at Circuit City. I see it on sale at one of the office supply or electronics stores almost every week, so don't pay full price! Newegg has it for $24.99 at the moment.

I've heard some good things about the Targus ChillPad also, but have no first-hand experience with it. A lot of the ones you'll find in stores are "passive" systems that work by elevating your laptop to increase airflow under and around it. The ones that I've mentioned are "active" becauser they have at least one, often two, fans to pull the hot air away from the laptop. I definitely recommend one with fans if you want maximum results.

Just ordered the Notepal Infinite from expansys for $41.94 delivered...A LOT less expensive than the same item on eBay, which would have to be shipped from Hong Kong.

    dear toshiba users,
i definitely have an overheating issue. my satellite m40x (3 yrs old) is going crazy, and me with him. in the last 6 months it was turning off by itself, and i always knew it was because of the high temperature, but i didnt do anything about it. now it works only if i put some ice underneath the laptop and i keep it lifted by putting something on the 4 corners.
i definitely need a notebook cooler, so, which one do u suggest? also, i read about undervolting/underclocking as a solution. is that possible on this laptop and how to do it?

    thanks for your replies..

A thorough cleaning (vacuuming and compressed air) works wonders on my system. I recently put some taller bumpers on the rear of my machine as well, and the extra clearance seems to also help keep it a bit cooler.

My X205-Sli3 moves a lot of air, so cleaning regularly is very important on this machine.
