I have done some testing to find stable speeds.

    here's what I've found:

EVGA Precision 1.8.1 is about the only working tool.
Using drivers from LV2G V.195.62 Notebook Intl WHQL with modified INF.

the values will be listed in Core clock, Shader Clock, Memory Clock format.

    stock is 450/1080/1600
Good downclock for NON games 340/816/1200

Working with NO major heat (FOR ME)

    460/1104/1610
    475/1140/1625
    485/1164/1650

If you choose to PUSH the values higher using EVGA, I would recommend NOT to change the memory clock and ONLY push the core and shader but keep them linked together.

The 485/1164/1650 was VERY stable. I let it run with the testing util for 30 minutes and the heat was WELL WITHIN specifications.

Remember, it's a notebook, so limited cooling and remember, you have a SMALLER wattage power supply than what would NORMALLY come with this kind of machine, so if you overdo it, you could kill your power supply.

    Damn ECO. LOL

    Hello,

Do you mind telling me what bag you bought? I'm in France and can't find anything decent. All I see here for 18"+ laptops is crap.

    Thanks,

I use 500/1250/1600 clock settings on mine. These are stock clock for 250M, so the only issue they could cause is overheating/overpowering - but I haven't been able to notice problems, even on extreme torture tests.

Since I am not able to add an additional hard drive to this machine, will I have a problem replacing the hdd with a corsair p256 ssd? It has a sata 3gb interface with sata power connector.

Is there any directions out there on how to change the hard drive on the x505?

    Thanks

    Jim

I never overclocked before, could you explain a bit more? Do you think that the 360m is a good card? A better successor to the 250M? How about ATI do you think Toshiba will ever put ATI in this machine?

As long you keep your original HD any problems just pop it back in for warranty. Other than that its a gamble :D

I had never OC my laptops, just to make sure theres no internal damage which might cause failure during the warranty period.

Toshiba might call it Negligence. Thats just me :)

    Jim,

    1. This one is easy to swap. Unplug, flip laptop over, open drive cover.

    2. Look at the layout....

    3. Undo the screw and slide it out. Swap the brackets.

    4. Put everything back as you remember from step 2 and 1.

On first bootup, go into the bios to make sure it detected and registered it properly.

    Enjoy your new space.

Do you recommend cloning the drive with acronis true image or reinstalling the os and all other programs. This will be a new setup as I am getting the new rig Friday. Thanks.

That's hard to answer for you. To me and others, the way Toshiba configured the partitions was horrible It's like 12 Gb total wasted. For someone not an IT type of person that may need the ability to instantly rebuild their machine then it's probably just fine.

However, if you aren't a techie and don't have your OWN copies of Win 7 and your OWN licenses and don't want to go thru the whole install, find your drivers, install your apps, then by all means clone it.

KEEP the original drive. Don't be tempted to sell it. If you ever have to do a warranty repair, you'll probably need to swap back. :)

I wiped mine and built it the way I wanted. My wife's laptop is still pretty much bone stock the way it came from the factory but with her software and stuff added on. She's happy with it as it is and if she ever had major issues, tho she has an IT geek at home, she would probably just use the restore feature and call it a day. :) Default is probably just fine for 80% of all the buyers out there. Heck, maybe even more than 80%.

    toshiba hdd protection
    Toshiba sleep and charge
    toshiba supervisor password

    Thanks

HDMI, only if you're going to use the hdmi port
DCC, is part of the sound stuff. Windows drivers are better at this time.

TVAP YES. Make sure intel chipset drivers installed first and reboot.

HDD protection, it's a smart idea.
Sleep and charge, again, feature you may or may not use. I installed.

Have you updated a BIOS to 1.4? BIOS 1.1 had a bug where fan stayed at 100% after sleep/standby.

I upgraded BIOS without problems. Before going ahead I stopped all possible programs as well as AV.

It's fully automated and the computer reboots all alone. At startup it installed a bunch of new drivers all for Intel chip set as far as I could see.

Besides lower fan speed at startup nothing else "visible".

I also updated the driver for the Realtek WiFi card but now the Icon is a bit erratic; Although WiFi is OK it either shows the unconnected "wired" network icon or the not connect WiFi icon (with the yellow star). As long as it works..

I don't see or hear any differences after BIOS update never notice any changes after or before.

    Bought a pair of KHX1066C5S3K2 / 4GX, 4gb 1066Mhz Ddr3 Non Ecc CL5 Sodimm Kit of 2 Intel XMP.

    1. Boot 8 sec faster
    2. No difference in gaming. maybe slightly haven't run any bench mark yet
    3. waste of money =D

My X505 850 started to leave the fan on high after booting up. Normally throttles down after the Win logo. A solution I found without knowing why is to reset the Bios. Fan then throttles down as it should at startup and when extra cooling is not required.

Yeah it seems like a lot of these companies are suffering from throttling, well right now everything is fine. I don't like the 250M much its pretty crappy, man i love quadro cards they have much better performance. Aren't you getting a replacement? If you do make your Qosmio a paper weight well then its time to get a netbook lolz. What do people think of the build quality of the machine?

I don't have any problems with the X500 series, just problems with W7 (eg BSOD). The build is great, solid but "I hate the LCD hinges" very wobbly and thats a minus.

I am waiting for the m11x cant wait to see what that netbook can do for an 11".

I also waiting on for the M11x, but if it has only a ccfl i will have to see. A lot of people are going to buy that machine since its so dirt cheap and its an Alienware. The company still rocks, well flagship. the build is decent for 1,400 better than most companies, especially bad HP's. Anyway, i seem to have blu ray problems once more gosh always something. Basically the same problem as i did with my xps m1530. i have the newest graphic card update from laptopvideo2go and same thing, it won't play the movies, the default blu ray program won't play idk maybe i need to update the other programs.

I m justing having all these hangs, freeze and BSOD all windows related problems. Other than the blu-ray region lock is one thing, but I will lived with it.

On the m11x any idea whats the CPU you can get on it theres isnt much info around or I am not googling hard enough. Hope you can custom like the others, Others wise it will be limited if alienware decided to make them stock from factory.

I come from a Dell Studio 1747 that I sent back after only 3 days as it was constantly hanging. I probably did the right thing as these Studios with Core i7 seem to have all kinds of problems: Hard & Software.

I'm very happy with my Toshiba. It seems sturdily build and I haven't had a single problem since the first startup.

I'm just interested to know if the difference between 7200 rpm disks and 5400 rpm would be significant. When I bought my X500 (in France) only 5400 disks were available.

I recently got the x505-q870 from Newegg. I've been loving it, but for some reason, the colors always seemed a little off. They appear a little washed out, and thanks to this thread, I can see that apparently, this is just a problem with the hardware.

My question is this, and please forgive me for my n00bness: What difference would the additional CCFL make of the 850 vs the 830? Would that rid me of my dull color problem? Or is that going to be the case for both screens? I assume since the 875 has the same resolution as the 850, and the 870 has the same as the 830, they must share screens, and if it'll solve this issue, I'd like to just RMA and upgrade.

Yes it the colors are really bad, too washed out and you can really see a lot of yellow tint. The newer qosmios have LED so just see if you can order a part or try for a upgrade that is what i want to do.

    JIm

I installed a corsair p256 ssd on my x505-q875. Are there any specific settings or tweaks for this system? I seem to be getting low read/writes so I wanted to see if there is anything specific with the system. I assume this can handle s-ata-2?

    Thanks

Do they have RGB LED though? White LED backlight improves generally nothing except power efficiency. Most of White LED backlit screens I've seen were actually worse then CCFL.
To improve both colour gamut or brightness, you need RGB LED backlight.

The HD+ (1680x945) screen on 830 is actually brighter then Full HD (1920x1080) on 850.

However HD+ screen has quite subdued colors - about 50% NTSC color gamut. While Full HD screen has about 90% color gamut, very vibrant and high contrast. Lower brightness (about 150 cd/m²) is only downside of Full HD screen on 850.
Second CCFL on Full HD screen does not seem to be enough to make it brighter, because of more narrow-spectrum colour filters there (and more vibrant colours therefore).

So you have to choose based on resolution, brightness, contrast and colour what screen you prefer, it's not obvious. I've chosen HD+ personally.

Actually that review is mistaken (unless X500-110 has different Full HD screen from X505-850)

X505-850 uses Full HD TFT matrix with dual CCFL by LG Electronics

I am having some major blu ray problems again, the drive scans it and with all the software i am running and latest patches it is again the same result as my m1530 scans the disc shows up but won't play it could it be the desktop mod drivers? I can't even go back to the mobile drivers it tells me it doesn't have the right hardware.

Well what is your solution invargar?

How much of a brightness difference is it? Like, does the screen look dim? Is it hard to see?

    Depends on lighting environment.
It does not look dim indoors as long as you dont let sunlight in - then brightness starts do get inadequate even on max.
In comparison between two screens brightness difference is really obvious. But also the colour & contrast difference. So it's pretty much to what you think is most important - personally I don't think you should bother. You will get used to color saturation in a while.

Jim, I'm still bothered by this color issue I mentioned earlier. However, as Ingvarr has pointed out, my tradeoff will be sharper color for less brightness. What would you say about the brightness of your screen? Is it acceptable?

At a glance, the Q875 has a single hard drive of 320GB, whereas the Q880 has what seems to be two harddrives - one at 564GB (500GB SATA + 64GB SSD), and one 500GB SATA.

Is the Q880 a lot better than the Q875 for the price?
