I have a Toshiba satellite M30 model PSM30C running under Windows XP HOME service pack 2.
The BIOS is 06/06/2005.
I am running the Toshiba as a wireless unit, connected to the Internet and a Home network via a Trendnet TEW-431BRP wireless router, to which are hard-wire connected three other computers, two running windows 2000 and one Windows XP PRO, all with service pack2.
For internet security I am running TrendMicor PC-Cillin with a firewall set for Home networking.
With this configuration I am able to connect successfully from the Toshiba via the router to folders on all the hard-wired computers. No problem.
However, when I do the reverse and try to connect to the laptop from any of the other computers on the network, the laptop is seen by these computers but I get the error message " \\(folder) is not accessible. Access is denied", even though Network sharing and Security in Sharing has been set to "Share this folder on the network" and "Allow network users to change my files".
At one point in time the computer name was changed from "PONTY" to "PORTABLE".
Microsoft Support at http://support.microsoft.Com/?kbid=810881&sd=RMVP indicates that this problem results from having the Security ID for the user changed ("the security ID no longer matches the security ID of the owner of the folder). They suggest a solution involving the turning off of Simple File Sharing, and changing the owner. Solution found!! However I am not able to find the Simple File Sharing option in Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Advanced Settings. Nor is there an OWNER tab in the Shared Folder Properties/Security/Advanced.
(Everest -> Operating system -> Operating system Features indicates that there is no "Safe Mode" or "Security Present", etc, available in this version of Toshiba's XP HOME; and perhaps therefore Simple File Sharing is also not supported).
Is there a way around this problem. Could it be as simple as changing back to the original computer name?
Thanks.

I believe these extra security settings for files/folders might only be available with XP Pro, but could be wrong.
Best thing to bypass this problem is to create a new folder and move all the files to that folder and share it out. This will guarantee the owner of the folder will be correct and the security id's will match. When working with the new folder, you can delete the old and rename the new back to the old.
Also, try disabling all firewall programs including XP's ICF.
