Hey guys,
I am new to this forum, stumbled here as I was looking online for tips on how to open my Toshiba.
I have an A75-S2131, 3 or 4 yrs old, that has had issues with heating and the heat sink that Toshiba acknowledges. Now I am out of warranty and the laptop is really really loud; the fans won't turn off!
The case is most likely filled up with dust and dirt, so a can of air hasn't been much of a help. I want to open the case but a little worried.
Would you advice that I should open it ? Do you guys know if Toshibas' are easy to open and reassemble ? Is replacing the fans and the heat sink an easy thing to do ? recommended ?
I haven't opened a laptop before, only my desktop couple times.
Any help would be appreciated ! Thanks in advance!

The A-75's are one of the easier ones to tear down. All case screws from the bottom - I believe there are two hold downs to remove at the external monitor port. You have to get the the KB bezel off to get to the screws to the KB - few more screws under there, there is also a screw along the edge once you remove the CD/DVD drive. Once you remove the LCD and the top cover there are 2 screws that need to be remove on the board. Also speaker cables and cable ribbons will need to be unplugged. Will need to be careful unplugging speakers - the connectors are prone to breaking - especially the right one. You do not want to apply to much force when sliding back the clip like device on the ribbon cables - to far out and the ribbons will not lock in correctly and you can not replace the clips. You will also need to be careful removing the board - so you dont catch the volumn wheel. The fans are on the bottom of the board - but the 4 screws to repease them are on the top. You will alos need new thermal paste for the CPU once you go to put this all back togather again. I'm sure theres a few things I left out - but you will see them and know what to do.
If your not comfortable doing this take it to a ASP center if you have one near by - not sure what other centers charge for an hour of labor ( we charge $65) but it may be worth your piece of mind to have it done. -
WOW that sounds complicated!
Do I have to do all of that if all I wanna do is remove the back cover and get to the fans?
How many hours would you estimates I would get charged for ? average ? -
It's not as complicated as it sounds. I personally can tear these down, replace a system board and reassemble in about 15-20 minutes.
The fans on the A75 sit on the bottom of the of the board and unfortunately you have to do all that to get to them - there is no access to the fans from the bottom of the base assembly.
If you take it some where to be serviced you should not be billed for more than 1 hour since it will not take that long. As far a how much that would vary based on where you take it and their hourly labor charge. Here it would be $65 + tax. -
Thanks a lot man !
Do you guys have locations in So Cal ? I think I am leaning more towards taking it to some place.
