I got the i7 940xm from my buddy, and after reading the manuel a couple of dozen times I finally went for it. I must admit it wasn't as difficult to get to the processr as I thought. It took 3.5 hours in total to do (I toooook my time)After I got everything put back together, I still have one screw I can't find where it goes( OH Well).

Congratulations.
Extra Screw huh? Oh well it was only probably from the fan assembly so it won't be too important...teehee
Keep us appraised of the performance. -
YES! Please keep us posted with the new temps the 940 chip gets. I'm very interested in how hot it gets and how well it performs!!!
Congrats man! Took a lot of guts. -

I used IC Diamond 24 carat thermal compound on both the new CPU, and repasted the GPU. LOL, I have a big syringe of this stuff left over.
I do notice the fan comes on quicker, and the surface between the speakers does feel warmer, but not hot. Just to be safe I do run my lappy cooler at full blast. I don't know that I have to, but I do.
As for the overall experience so far, the lappy does run a lot faster, everything flies. Its like tuning up your cars engine, nothing drastic but smoother. Games seems to run a little faster ( I'm not a bench mark guy-as long as the games work, I'm fine).
If these temps stay same, or get worse I'll post. After opening this lappy up it is put together rather well.
MAYBE I CAN WORK FOR UPS. -
please tell us also what temps do you have on gpu after using ne paste.
EDIT
any photos -
I never thought to check the temp. The only reason I re-pasted was in order to get to the CPU, the heatsink runs across the CPU (its underneath). So, when I removed the heat sink to get to the CPU, video card paste came up with it so, I cleaned it and added mine.
After 2 hours on Metro 2033, and I should have added NFS: Hot pursuit for about and hour (I'm hooked on that game) gpu was 67c -
Hey scanner I'm really intrigued by your upgrade. Our laptops are the same and are pretty fast. Unfortunately alot of the games i play require 3.0 ghz + processing speed where the 740qm falls short at 2.93 where as you can get to 3.33ghz. So where my bottleneck falls is on the processor unfortunately.
Would you mind checking out this demo and letting me know how it performed? Also did you get faster memory or just the cpu upgrade? I would really like to know how this game performs before i consider this upgrade any further.

I also got my hands on one of these and was wondering if anyone knows if I need to do anything special to the bios or thermal software once I put this into My Qosmio? It runs like a dream until I play a game then, pffft! black screen reset. Any help would be appreciated!
-
What Lappy do you have. Is your lappy in the right line?? Meaning, non-sandy bridge and the CPU was an I720,740 etc. I did not have to do anything special-never looked at the bios. I just took out the old CPU and dropped the new one in. Cleaned up the old thermal paste, and applied the new IC diamond 24 thermal paste I had. No problems since. -
i love laptop upgrades
maxxed the hell out of my old packard bell back in the early 2000's, P4 HT 3.06, 1Gb RAM and and an nVidia 64mb graphics card. software clocked the lot and melted the chassis! epic fun! lol! -
I did the same as you and our laptops are nearly similar except your's has the 4XX GPU and I have the 3XX. you have SSD and I have 2 traditional drives. any help anyone anywhere. I love gaming and upgrading and this is really saddening! -
I bought an Alienware M18X with a 2920XM cpu and to be honest, its not a worthwhile investment. I should have got the second GPU 6970M rather than the 2920XM. Super Pi is only a half second quicker @ 1M and a second @ 2M. Its hotter and draws more power. My older Dell XPS 1730 with Extreme CPU was [is] very quick but it seems these newer i7 CPUs dont rely on clock speed as much.

The black screen, and restarting did happen to me twice. It happened during Metro 2033, and Rage The room was already warm, and I didn't turn on my cooler. When I checked my temps, they were in the mid 90s (yikes)
So, go back and make sure you reconnected the fan properly and that its working; repaste your CPU, and if its running to hot get a cooler. I do agree with Smoke_Skull the 940xm was not worth it, I've had it for a while now, if I hadn't gotten it in a trade with a friend I would never have bought it. -
How do you deal with those temps!? >.< I had the 940XM for all of a day and then it was out... Idled around 75*C and hit around 100*C in games. Maybe 95*C if I used the cooler. Older i5 is back in now.
Went with a SSD instead.
-
My temps haven't been a problem since I put in the 940xm. I idle around 50-55, and Max between 75-80. Thats playing Metro 2033 for about 3hrs. I played ME2 for 5hrs last winter (snowed in) no problem. My lappy only shutoff once, and thats because the room I was in was really hot. -
-
I didn't update bios, or anything else. The only thing I did was completely clean the thermal paste that was on both the CPU, and GPU. I replaced it with the IC diamond 24 thermal paste, then put the lappy back together. -
Oh... yeah that TIM will make a serious difference...
I used some crap that I had lying around... Shoulda used the GC-Xtreme I had laying in my closet... o.o
-
I've already got a SSD as my OS drive but I want to push this machine as far as it will go. the sale for my machine didn't go through since the guy was so naive that he didn't tell me he didn't have the money to complete it. Hate it when people do that. Especially local sales.
Thankfully I hadn't erased any of the data and I figured, after seeing how cheap an i7 920XM is, I figured I'd get one.
So is there anything else I should get in place of that chip? Is the dual core i7 640M worth it instead of that chip? I really need a chip that has a more noticeable turbo boost. -
Ive had my Qosmio for a while now and happened to come across your post when I was looking into possible upgrades for my unit. I have a x505-865 however been upgraded to 16gigs of ram with a 360gts video card a Seagate Momentus XT (and orriginal drive in bay 2) and I even bought higher output fans for better cooling (which actually did help). I was wondering since it runs the 430m which is a Socket G1 non sandy bridge if anyone knows if it is possible to swap to the 940xm. Since this series has little difference between the lower end models and the higher end models I figgured it would be more cost effective down the road to upgrade it by buying the parts seperatly. The board is fully capable of running a i7 720qm that much I know.
-
Your q865 should be able to recognize a 940xm [same motherboard and bios series as the q890s series; the i5 models and i7 models have no difference in motherboards that I am aware of]. I was curious whether your Qosmio had the lower rated 120W adapter, but in fact yours is 180W, so it should have enough power to support it: Model Content Page
Can I ask, how did you improve your cooling? Did you replace your internal fans? OR are you using a laptop cooler?
Good luck and keep us posted with any updates. -
I actually bought higher output notebook fans off of ebay through some research I ended up getting a higher ccfm rated fan and swapped out the actual unit. It took a little custom modification to the housing however in the long run i turned out an additional 600 ccfm per unit. I checked my power supply it didnt have a wattage rating on it however it did have everything else so 19v x 9.5a = 180.5w so Im under the impression I have the 180w power supply.

Bought the i7 940! Cant wait till it gets here! There were a couple other things I was wondering as well... Namely being the GPU. Now as far as I know there is no way to upgrade the GPU in the unit even though its built to be swapable. I was wondering if anyone had any experience in this, if it was possible to swap out the 360gts for a gtx version of another unit. Or if they knew what my options were... The 300 series is honestly nothing special but if thats what im stuck with then thats what im stuck with =(

I actually moved your previous post regarding GPU upgrades to the x500 Owners Thread [didn't want to derail the CPU theme in this thread].

I installed the 940XM in my old X505 that I sold to a friend and it gets HOT. I used IC7 with it and it still gets really toasty. But he doesn't have a cooling pad with it so... that's probably why.
Hits roughly 90*C on the hottest core when just propped up on a book. I tested it with the U3 that I use on my Alienware and found that it only hit around 84*C because of the fan placement. (Placed one under the vent that's over the contact plate too.) So he's snagging the U3 with it too. If I had access to the PC, I'd validate it, but he's finicky about adding programs he doesn't know about.
However he DOES have a cat in the house and the place does get kinda dusty...I didn't check the fan like I should have but he'll be fine methinks.

Great info Glid!
It's always good to hear these stories so others have a heads up incase they want to attempt such an upgrade. Sounds like the 940XM should be ok as long as it remains below the TJ-100 Celsius threshold.
Also, in my experience the x505 does not throttle [BIOS 1.10], so he shouldn't have any performance decreases.
Thanks for the update! -

qosmio x505-q898
I just installed a 920xm processor and 16GB of memory. My temps are around 48C doing light work but as of yet I have not stressed it. It appears that the install worked well.
edited to describe the model.Last edited: Mar 29, 2015
