Now that Toshiba has admitted losing the High Definition dvd war, anyone have any ideas about what those of us with x205's equipped with those drives can swap them for? Optimally, it would be nice to be able to alter them to run a blu-ray drive, instead. What do others think/ suggest?

ill buy yours!...if its cheap....
and yes if you can find the same size speced blu ray or DVD drive you can swap it out. -
Keep it as a learning tool for your children to warn them about being early adopters.
-
Dam narsnail I was going to ask the same thing, Thats funny!!!!
-
I dunno, I'm hopin to snag some HD DVD's cheap, i love the things... I'll play em on the X205 and the Xbox360.... course the PS3 is sittin' next to it, so i'll be covered, but for some reason always prefered HD DVD's.....
-
I was thinking of doing the same as be77solo and look for cheap HD DVD's to at least have some movies to watch on my x205.
-
Well, you know the firesales are coming soon. Might as well stock up on cheap HD, unless you just want to bail out completely, and start over with the Blu.
-
Was at Bestbuy and a lot of the HD-DVD's were $14.99. Toshiba HD-DVD player $150 50% off.
-
I have been using both formats, since my FZ180E came with a Blueray player and recorder so I never supported one side and used both while the dust settled.
-
Sounds like the opposite of good business sense for both to have kept the prices so darn high, I'am sure Toshiba could have cut prices in half on the movies and players and still made a nice profit, and more could have afforded them. now look at them they lost millions, don't understand it at all.

I'm looking for cheap movies myself. I think the drive is far-from useless - and having an HD DVD drive wasn't a buying factor so I'm alright.
Love the idea about showing it to the kids though... -
Well I never really wanted the HD DVD in the computer. I live in a PS3 blu ray home. I had to get the computer at Best Buy, because of a credit I had with them, and the only way to get a Toshiba with a video card good enough to play Oblivion was to get the Satellite x205-s9349 that came with the HD DVD. Other brands were not in the running based on price and reliability. If Narsnail's right, and it's just a matter of finding the right size blu ray drive, that'd be great. I expect there'd be driver and other considerations. What specs besides size would have to be matched by an alternate drive?

When I bought my 2 laptops having the HD DVD drive was not a factor for me, I was just looking for good gaming laptops for a reasonable price and having the HD DVD was just a plus for me but not the reason to buy the laptops.
-
mine never worked anyway (running XP). Good Riddence format war!
-
So theres no way to get HD playback in XP? What about burning/watching normal DVD? I only ask because im on the verge of switching back to XP...
-
I am playing HD DVD's on mine in XP using Power DVD Ultra and it work fine.
-
That makes me feel better.... now if I can just figure out which drivers i need for the XP install....
-
Seems to me the HD-DVD drive was always a waste without all models having the HDMI port....
Options for now useless HD DVD drive in X205?
