I am wondering about the fan noise, it seems the unit I have is defectuous..
What about the fan noise on your unit?
it seeams there is 3 fan levels: off/low/high
mine is almost always on low (goes to off mode 1 minute every 15 minutes).. is it the same on your model?
I am asking just to be sure the unit compusmart shipped to me isnt defectuous... -
I am like 2 days away from ordering this laptop, but the new Ferrari 5006 is commin out soon... besides the 40 gb bigger hard drive is there anything that makes that laptop better?
does the laptop feel cheeply built? or is it strong feeling for a 17 inch?
does it get really hot during gaming? or if it is set on your lap or the rug?
answering these question will help me decide about this laptop cause it looks really good inside and out other wise -
if you are in a quiet room, then you will clearly notice the noise of the fan even when it is in the "low speed mode"..(most of the time it is in the low speed mode)
there seems to be 3 speeds:
off : you hear nothing
low: you clearly hear the fan when in a quiet room (but when you are outside, with the ambient noise you will not notice it)
high: a small "whirl" that happens from time to time (not often, but it happens; lets say every 15-20 min)
I think there should be a way to control the speed of the fan through software, but I am not sure. (does anyone here knows some software that can do this?)
or otherwise you can still disassemble the laptop and remove the fan... (you have 1 year warranty in case of..)

try Notebook Hardware Control?

The notebook has a powerful GPU and that generates heat. If it is not allowed to cool itself, it will result in a faster degradation of its components. If you want it to run quieter, you can undervolt your CPU and underclock your GPU.

Picked one up from Compusmart back in late September for $2029 (they matched a Futureshop sale that was going on at the time). The first unit I got from them was definately a lemon (you can read about it here). The second unit has been running great so far.
My fan seems to run the same as others have described and haven't found it annoying, but maybe I'm not that picky.
As far as heat goes, I haven't done any gaming, just heavy CPU and HD usage via MATLAB simulations I was running for hours. I was pretty impressed how cool it stayed, but of course that may not be indicative of what to expect with gaming.
With respect to build, it isn't an IBM, but I'm happy considering what I paid for it. Keyboard flex is noticible (full size) but no worse than any non-IBM machine I tried.
Honestly, my biggest complaint is the small (half size) right hand side shift key. I've pretty much gotten used to it, but it still gets me once and awhile.
Good luck.
